Two things: first, if you can get it booted, open up disk utility and see what the SMART status is. If it says verified, see if you can find a SMART reader out there to get more comprehensive info (I used to have a link to it; if you search the forum, you'll probably find it, or search sourceforge).
I'm betting it's the hard drive and that it is a problem with the #5 test, which is allocated space for dead blocks. Still, there are a myriad of things it could be. Try removing all added RAM, your airport card, and any peripherals, and boot into safe mode and see if you're getting any of the same problems. From there, work backwards.
