Picking up the 16 Pro Max Friday and turning in a 15 Pro Max. Ideally I would walk in there with 18.0 RC on my phone and be in and out. Unfortunately, Apple did this 18.1 thing and I was not paying attention and installed it thinking it was just another beta release.

I have done this before and I could have sworn when I go to restore the back up, the new phone will tell me it needs to update to the same beta and we go from there. I just left the Apple store and asked some process questions and they telling me the only way to do this is to set the new phone up as a new device, sign in, enable beta's, download 18.1, wipe it clean and then do the transfer.

I think they are mistaken. Doesn't the new phone (running 18.0 RC) see the backup to be restored and this triggers it to install 18.1b4?

I've been wondering the same thing the last couple days. I would bet that since .1 is an extra step in beta authorization that you will have to do it the way they are advising. The only other thought I'd had was flashing the 18.1 beta 4 image straight out of the box to avoid having to go through the setup screens and save a couple of minutes. Maybe Apple will see this issue coming and implement something for us.

The new phone could install a general release update as part of setup to get it current with your backup, but then you would be waiting until October (I remember doing this last year when I already had 17.0.1 on my phone before picking up the 15 --and it was still a mess as it didn't transfer my ESIM). I don't think it can update to a beta as part of setup. Guess we will find out in a couple days.

They won't do it straight out of the box, I asked, they said "we don't even have the betas, they don't give them to us".

Surely you would have known you were installing 18.1. You have to be registered as a developer for 18.1 as it’s not available as a public beta yet so I would think you’d be aware of what you’re doing.

You even have to specifically select 18.1 instead of 18.0

Dude , of course I did. It was like 6 weeks ago. What I didn’t know was that it was going to still be in beta and not part of the path to RC. Apple has never run two betas at the same time. Yes, I’m sure this was documented and I missed it. It’s not like I installed a beta over RC the day before pickup.

Focus on the question if you want to be helpful or move on.
