since no one answered, I am going to presume that sleep wake failure/restart was definitely an OS problem (what little research I could find out on this issue.)
I wonder if it was because I upgraded Mavericks from ML 10.8.5 - that build of ML caused this Sleep Wake Failure/Restart in a few machines.
Strangely I was actively using my iMac when this happened: it was not asleep.
