I thought the $799 mini came with 2.26 CPU

Considering I just discovered a few minutes ago that my 2.53GHz Macbook Pro is running a certain task that my work depends on 30% faster than my 2.66GHz Mac Pro is doing

Good Mac Mini configuration that should stay current for quite a while. I'm just wondering what the need is for a 2nd desktop. Nothing wrong with that, but just curious.

Currently, I have an Apple TV hooks up to the TV in the basement, it serves its' purpose. However, I want a little bit more and that's the Mac mini. Now, it's connected to the TV in the living room.

Spot on. This is one thing that people will have to realise, going to 64-bit does not mean that suddenly all your tasks will speed up, you need code to be written for 64-bit processing to take advantage of the artchitecture. It will take a while to see the benefits. It took years before it was even viable with Windows to run a 64-bit system . SL will not magically speed up the tasks you do today, you will have to wait for vendors to update thier software

Play around with the base spec configs - more HD and ram options.

For example, you can get the 2.0GHz 320GB model with 2GB ram, but for another £10 you could get 2.26 model with 2GB ram with 120GB. (£659)

My choice is going to be 2.26, 250GB, 4GB RAM. Comes out at £819 rather than speccing the 320GB model with similar RAM and processor options for £850. I'll take the £30 saving over an extra 70GB, this thing is expensive enough already 😀

But why get the hard drive and RAM from Apple? You could get a stock 2.26 for £619, a 7200rpm 500gb hard drive aftermarket for about £105 and 4GB of RAM for £50 giving you a 2.26GHz Mac Mini with a fast big 500GB 7200rpm hard drive and 4GB of RAM for £774, £45 cheaper than your custom build and with double the hard drive space and a significantly faster hard drive.

The U.S. store has it at 2.0 with 2.26 as an option. I can't imagine that bigger hard drive and 1 GB additional ram is worth $200. Was it always like that? I though 2.26 was the default for the $799 model. I never considered that model but I really thought it came with the faster CPU.

But then I'd have a leftover 120GB drive and ram stick. 🙁 For the convenience, I'd rather just spec it on the Store. Plus I get edu discount 🙂

I have 2 x 500GB 7200rpm externals over fw800 so not too interested in a larger drive, faster is always good though... I'll want to whack an SSD in there one day I suppose.
