I also dont get it.. People that buys iPad 10 over Used iPad Air 4 are like those people who were born Yesterday.
Even both devices are A14, others said that iPad 10 is even slightly slower in power than iPad Air 4.
If people buy iPad 10 over iPad Air 4 they will lose:
1. Better and Louder Speaker (iPad Air 4 has wayy bass, louder, and better sound seperation than iPad 10)
2. Deeper Black
3. Anti Reflective Coating
4. P3 Wide Color and Laminated Display
5. Magic Keyboard Compatibility
6. Apple Gen 2 Compatibility.
7. Most iPad Air and Pro Cases won't fit on iPad 10.
8. Better Wi-fi Reception.
9. Slimmer, (iPad 10 is bit heavier)
10. Thinner BEZELS. (iPad 10 has thicker bezels in side.. does making the screen size look like smaller than iPad Air 4)
It doesn't look like the A14 on the iPad 10 is any different than the one in the Air 4- it's not a binned/restricted A14, it's the full chip with benchmarking coming out almost identical from what I've seen.

But you are right on all of these other points. I would just argue a counterpoint that for a very few of us- the display on the 10th gen is better, as some of us have weird sensitivity to how Apple applies the P3 wide color gamut on the other more advanced iPads- seemingly using temporal dithering that causes burning, watery eyes, eye strain, or sometimes headaches.
With the 10th gen being sRGB, it has no need for temporal dithering- and Notebookcheck has proven in their testing that this is not present on this display. I also don't notice any difference in colors visibility when using it in the store next to an Air 5 or a Pro M1 11"- but of course I know there are color limitations compared to those others.

It's disappointing because I really want the Air 5, right now it's only $100 more than the 10th gen, with the big improvement in my eyes being the M1 chip and 8GB RAM.

But, I had to settle for the 10th gen, which seems it'll still be a solid device.

One other benefit to buying the 10th gen is that you can get it new, and in my case it was at Costco (on sale for $389) where they add an extra year warranty for free- so I have two full years of warranty, that I wouldn't otherwise get buying a used device.

I know my viewpoint is a minority here and you are absolutely right on your points- just explaining my oddball other side to this equation. :)

Agreed, I still don’t understand how some people say having more choice is bad for the consumer. The $449 iPad has its own merits, particularly for those who want a sleek media consumption device.
Honestly, though- being just as powerful as the Air 4 and within reach of the M1 iPads as far as single core CPU performance, it's probably decent for almost anything except for the heaviest of tasks (major multitasking or 4K video editing, etc.), correct?

Saw the new iPad in the store, did not expect that it was so good. It struck me how light it was - especially in comparison to my 12.9”. A great device with a medium-sized screen. Would choose it over an iPad air any day. Regarding the pencil - I have no use of it. One day in the near-distant future I’ll upgrade to a basic iPad - the pro 12.9” is already put of my price range. Got the 2020 256GB for 1200€, nowadays the same model is 1500€. Bought it because it was the first (or second) iPad with a USB-C port.

Regarding the Pencil- many of us haven't had one yet as it's our first entry into the iPad universe.... so for my case, I bought a 10th gen at Costco here in the US on sale for $389- and I am not an artist, and would only be using a pencil for light photo editing in Affinity Photo or Pixelmator Photo- so I bought a really nice (and extremely high rated) knockoff on Amazon on sale for $20... it charges via USB-C with no adapter to deal with like the Apple Pencil 2, and is a miniscule fraction of the price. It also has magnets in it to stick to the side of the device (though won't charge that way on the Air and Pro models).

All in all I personally think this was a good deal. Now would I have bought it at $450? No, at that point I would have struggled to see the value in the device. But I feel good about what I got for $389- and Costco throws an additional year of warranty in at no extra cost, so that was an added bonus!

Gaming can be iffy, too. Been playing Art of War Legions and it stutters on the Air 4 and mini 6. Not sure if that’s due to CPU, GPU or RAM.

Interesting- maybe it's all of the above?

Quite possible. There’s usually 500-700 units/troops on the screen when I get stutters.

I’ve also played the game on my smurf account (the iCloud account I use beta testing). The iPhone 7 (A10/2GB) is pretty much stop motion and the iPad 7 (A10/3GB) isn’t that much better. iPad 9 (A13/3GB) stutters fairly often. Smooth sailing on the Air 5 (M1/8GB) though even when I’m recording the screen/gameplay.

I was at apple today need an iPad and the specs are so overlapping, for the 10 gen and air for example. I f I get the air I'm certain it will be replaced in 2-3 months. I love the Pro but is it worth the $799 for medica and browsing? OR are others pretty happy with the 10 gen iPad?

The Air is the sweet spot since it jumps to M1, in my opinion. The rest depends on your usage.

The Air 5 has M1 and 8GB RAM. As far as performance goes, it will be good for years (5-8 seems entirely feasible as that’s how long I expect the M1 MacBook Air to last).

Previous iPads (mostly pre-A12), you’d upgrade because performance is lacking (too slow, too many reloads, etc). With M1 + 8/16GB, it will likely be speedy even when you replace it due to other factors (accidental damage, battery life, storage upgrade, cellular upgrade, display upgrade, new accessories/connections, etc).

Not a fan of the 10th gen at current pricing. I have A14/A15 + 4GB RAM devices and they apps/tabs reload (or crash) too often for my liking. That’s with current iPadOS. It will likely only get worse in the future.

Not much performance difference between M1 and M2 except for some niche uses (e.g. using ProRes or faster neural engine).

Honestly, between M1 Air 5 and M2 Pro 11, for me the choice would depend not on the chipset but on other factors (TouchID vs FaceID, storage options, ProMotion, speakers, etc).

If I can get a brand new or certified refurb M1 iPP for $200+ cheaper than a similarly configured M2 iPP, I'd go for the M1 iPP in a heartbeat.

So what changed?

Now as a i have upgraded to iPad 10 it didn't hurt my eye, actually it retains the same Color, Texture and Overall display quality of what my iPad 9 has before. Though both iPad 9 and iPad 10 tend to be still more reflective than those who have iPad Air/Pros..

BTW i'm nearsighted , or perhaps my eyes is also sensitive to such a newer display technology to such P3 Wide Color that iPad Air/Pro...

i have the iPad 10 th gen keep in mind that the iPad 10th gen has bluetooth 5.2 wish is nic at this price point the iPad Pro has Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E how ever the iPad Air 5 only comes with a older blue tooth 5.0 so if not having blue tooth 5.2 or 5.3 not a big deal breaker for you then the air may be the sweet spot has others have said

I wounder what iPad this user ended up getting

I posted this in another thread, but I bought, and ultimately returned, this iPad. A few reasons

1) Clunky / expensive keyboard - didn’t like the kickstand, keyboard is too expensive relative to cost of the iPad, not as good as the iPad Pro keyboards, etc

2) Machine, overall, wasn’t a big enough upgrade over my current 9th gen at the cost

I did like the landscape camera and the slightly improved screen / camera / etc. If I were to actually replace my current smaller iPad, would likely go for Air or Pro depending on when the new Pros are expected to come out

I'm stuck at the moment. I prefer the keyboard of the new iPad and the camera position, but it has the dreadful non-laminated screen (even a bargin basement kids tablet has this!) and 64GB isn't enough storage so would end up paying iPad Air prices anyway.

But the iPad Air has the portrait camera and the heavy floating keyboard with no function keys.

The whole lineup is a mess to be honest. I hope when the new Air's and Pro's come out hopefully with new accessories it all starts to make a bit more sense.

I really like the camera position on the 10th gen as well, but explain the keyboard differences to me. I have a 12.9 with MK, and the Air uses the MK, right? I’m assuming by floating you mean how it sits the iPad up?
