The X is a nice phone but the battery always annoyed me. It didn't last as long as the 7 plus I had before and was worse after a year, even though it appeared to be fine on the apple tests.

So I fancied the larger screen, much bigger battery (and less strain from the lower res/LCD screen) and faster cpu.

Am I the only one!

Very pleased with my choice so far - don't notice much in the screen except I can see its bigger and clearer for text.

Also the speaker phone seems to be a bit louder and clearer ….

and I got to have a blue one :)

can't wait to try out the new graphics chip pumping around less pixels!!

As long as the larger size of the phone doesn’t bother you, you’ll love it. The XR flies with the A12 and lower res screen.

Yes, you did upgrade. I Love my XR. Two weeks ago I sold my Samsung S9 and traded my iPhone 8 in on the XR and have not looked back. I love the size, I’m usually a small phone guy, I love the battery life, and the speakers. The phone is fast as well. Price was not an issue for me. I just liked the XR better than the XS. I got white by the way.
Enjoy!

I sold my iPhone X and got a one plus 6t. And as I always do I missed iMessage and iPhone. So I didn’t want to shell out 1000 bucks plus for an iPhone so I said let me give the iPhone XR a shot. Got a 128gb black iPhone XR and I couldn’t be happier. I honestly would choose it over my X I sold any day.

How does the camera compare to the X?

The XR loses the telephoto lens/sensor of the X, which is a bummer as I found it useful.

However the main wide angle camera in the XR is superior to the X as the sensor is larger and thus it is better in low light. It also has an upgraded image processor.

I have not compared pictures yet but this is what I read:
“The new A12 processor also includes a new image signal processor (ISP), and that's going to drive a lot of the photographic improvements with the new iPhone ... the size of the sensor has gone from 1.2 to 1.4 microns and the pixels are deeper as well. The result is a 50 improvement in light gathering capability.

With Smart HDR, your iPhone can capture multiple exposures in a short time frame for a balanced shot. The iPhone XR is able to capture more exposures in a shorter amount of time, reducing shutter lag to the point where you shouldn't notice it. After using the new camera, our columnist Jason Snell calls Smart HDR reason enough to justify an upgrade to the new iPhones all on its own.

Apple says the sensor on the main rear camera is larger, which should help the iPhone XS grab more light even in darker settings. That's a necessary improvement, as the iPhone X wasn't particularly adept at low-light photography when stacked up against other leading flagship phones

Rgds

I love the blue, I have coral and was really torn between the two colours when I bought mine. Enjoy your new phone and happy new year!

Is it really an upgrade with the lesser camera?

It is an upgrade if you compare only the main camera, if you use the telephoto lens and portrait mode with portrait lighting extensively then no. But then again, the dual camera setup does not always use the telephoto lens when lighting is dark as the main camera performs better in those condition with digital zoom.. so yea.

I’ve never been an “S” cycle upgrader. Even though I’m on the Apple upgrade program, there wasn’t enough of a difference for me to upgrade from the X this year. No battery or other issues with my X so, no real urgency.

I’ll wait until the next one.

Wouldnt going from the X to the XR be a downgrade and not a upgrade? XR is cheaper screen, larger bezel, less of a camera, etc vs the X.
Depends on what's important to the individual. XR: bigger screen, better processor, better main camera, better speakers, better battery life. Oh yeah, all the pretty colors. :D X: OLED, 3D Touch, zoom lens, stainless steel.

Kind of hard to say the XR is an upgrade from the X. But idk for some reason I’m enjoying the XR more then the X. Maybe the bigger screen, better battery, and the all black color is what is making me enjoy this phone more. I never really used the telephoto lens on the X. Plus I got the X in white and silver because I was impatient and I hated that color lol.

I had the opportunity to switch over to the XR for free basically... My buddy picked one up practically new for a great price on CL and ended up getting a second one price was great so he decided to get both in order to sell one for a profit... anyways... he offered me one of them for what he paid, red 128gb... and although the red color did look sexy and I would be able to sell my X and actually pocket a couple hundred bucks I just couldn't do it. the thicker borders although not much of a difference did bother me a little bit..... screen quality to be honest I dont see a difference between OLED and LCD on iphones...but just psychologically I felt like I was downgrading and going backwards in screen quality (weird I know) 3D touch I don't use much so didn't care there..... my iPhone X battery is great and always lasts me all day. And I use portrait mode with objects a lot so I didnt want to give that up (and yes I've tried the apps that do it but its just not the same).

the fact that I really considered it and it was close does tell you all you need to know about the XR though... its a great phone for the price... it very closely compares to a $1100 iPhone X

Congratulations, and enjoy your new phone. I've got the white one but it was between that and the blue.

Some would say it's more of a side-grade than an upgrade but don't listen to them. The XR has a great display, camera and you'll appreciate the increase in screen size from the X.

BTW which model did you get, the 64GB, 128 or 256? I went for the 128 which I thought was fantastic for only 50 Pounds more.

I bought the iPhone XS Max to replace my X as I wanted a larger screen but found it too large and returned it.

I then bought my son an iPhone XR for xmas to replace his 6 and I think the screen size is perfect and also think it takes better pictures than my X, especially when using portrait mode - a huge difference, like night and day!

I'm definitely not calling the XR a downgrade and also now also thinking of getting another one for the Mrs.

Your Mrs will love it. Of all the phones I've bought, this has been the best in terms of features, design and price. I'd rather have it than any Android phone, including the Note 9.

Had the 8+ and traded for the XR. Loved everything about the phone but, it was just too big and combersome to carry. Exchanged it for XS and am content. So there’s that.

XR Pros:
Better processor (The Xr will outlast the X at least one additional year of iOS updates.)
Better rear wide angle camera
Better portrait editing
Better battery life
More color options
Bigger screen
More memory options (128gb)

X Pros:
OLED
Telephoto rear camera
3D Touch
A little slimmer

You be the judge.

As weird as it is, I wouldn’t want to give up true blacks. Once a dark mode comes, you’ll see battery life soar on the OLED models. I also use 3D Touch on a daily basis.
