My sincerest apologies

I didn't realise the MR site was an old boys club. Us newbies promise never to ask a stupid question ever again. Terribly sorry to have disturbed your busy day.

P.S. This post has now taken me to 3, only 497 to go!!!

Don't worry about it mate. It's almost become a type of initiation it happens so often. ;)

Welcome to MR and enjoy. :)

I gotta say I think this rule sucks big style. I have never known a forum where this type of 'I'm better than you cos I have posted so many times that I got awarded an avatar' exists.

This type of thing does not belong in the Mac community. This is the poncey style of windowz forum users.

Just because we don't spend all our time on this forum doesn't mean we should be excluded from expression does it? I for one will never reach 500 posts, as usually just read the interesting posts.

Filter newbies avatar posts indeed...

Avatars are not there to say "I'm better than you", they are simply a way to identify more established members within the forum. If it's that important to you, then contribute to the community and you'll soon be able to "express" yourself. If that's not an adequate solution then the only other thing I can think of is simply not visiting this poncey forum. :)

Nobody says that owning an avatar makes you a better person. I can think of many forum members without avatars whose posts I would rather read than some who do.

It's really just a sign that someone has put a little commmitment in and helps others spot them a little more easily. That's all.

You are not excluded from expression. You can have a sig and you can post... put enough of them together and you can have a 'tar too, if it's that important to you. Some people manage it in 12-14 weeks or so.

Or even 11 weeks if like me you have an opinion on absolutely everything :D

To any new posters here, why is it such a big deal? You can express yourself much better by putting down your comments on relevant threads. Just enjoy being here and contributing and the 'tar limit will pass by sooner or later.

Well if number of posts doesn't work for you - you can always rate people on their account number. The smaller the number, the longer that person has been around. You can see it in the URL if you view their account details. This way we can discriminate on more than one factor. :D

^^What eva is saying, is that this issue probably comes up once a month, and there are always requests to lower the 'tar post limit, but it still hasn't changed and most likely won't change... ever.

so how about dropping the limit to 100. Seems like 500 is

500 has been the limit since the dawn of MR - that won't change - and it really shouldn't matter. It is what it is.

Makes me think of practice SATs back in the day where you had to write in handwriting, "I yam what I yam." :D

Poor me

Oh well. It's not that bad. We get to enjoy a wealth of knowledge at our finger tips. A small price to pay for others experience.

It sounds to me that all you care about is getting an avatar and not enjoying the experience that is MR. If thats all your gonna talk about here it will take you forever to reach 500 and it wont be as enjoyable for you here. The avatar is a right of passage like drinking. We all started with no Tar and we lived with it. So either do the same or find another forum.

Don't forget you can put a picture of yourself (or other picture you like) in your user profile as soon as you join. No post count required. And you can put links in your signature, e.g., to point at a whole gallery of images.

I swear, it took me like three years to get to 6502.

By then, I didn't care whether I had one or not. :D :D :D

My advice: just wait. Getting an avatar is not that big a deal.
