Do you really think there's a difference between consumer and "workstation grade" parts? I had a Dell Precision workstation for work. Three motherboards replaced in six months.

..and nobody has ever had a problem with a macbook logic board??

Of all the computers i have had, Dell, HP, IBM and Apple, none have ever given me problems. It is just pure bad luck in my opinion.

I would love this!

However, like many people have said, I cant see this becoming a reality.

Also I think someone else has mentioned before; what I'd really like is an updated 17" MBP in the form factor we last saw it in rather than the "you cant do anything to upgrade it" rMBP form.

I got my early 2011 17" MBP brand new with upgrades to a 120GB SSD and an anti glare screen.

Since then its had an SD card reader or USB 3 in the express card slot. a move to 8GB of 1600mhz RAM, A 240GB SSD and a 1TB HDD in the optibay.
I've got the 2012 BT card on its way so I'll be able to use handoff etc and RAM prices are getting to a point now where it wont be too long before I go to 16GB.

This ability to upgrade components has ment that I really haven't needed to think about upgrading to a completely new machine and should hopefully still get another couple of years from it.

For me this its a real plus that every so often I can spend a relatively small amount and get that "ooh feels like new again" feeling. But Apple want people to buy from them and refresh their machines more often, not less. So as we're seeing they are even moving away from being able to easily upgrade ram. Hence my dream machine will never become a reality :(

Lucky you! I wanted the regular ol' 15" MBP with the anti-glare but I ended up settling for a 15" rMBP. The 17" specced out was always in my sights though, I always viewed that as potentially having the ultimate mac if you got the right version and upgraded it proper.

I find the wording on the poll offensive.

the 15" rMBP is far from puny, it has a screen that eclipses the previous 17" MBP.

There was a reason they stopped making the 17" MBP (and they stopped with most of the development on it with the previous iteration - It could quite easily have had both an SD card slot and an ExpressCard slot).

They were not selling enough to make any money on them.

You can want one all you want, but unless Apple is going to make their development costs back, plus a significant amount more, they are not going to do it.

oh you're right except for the offensive part. i have a retina 15" and i love it. i've never had a computer longer than this machine (i got it same week product launched). i also just got a 5k iMac and i hate it. it's too big. am returning it, possibly going to get a mid-14 MBPr 15. So i love the machine.

I just would like a 4k 17" one even more. But I know it ain't happening. Still, a boy can dream, no?

Oh sure you can dream.

I had a mid '12 15" rMBP too. You'll love the mid '14, my new one is an absolute beast of a machine, just make sure you get at least the 2.5 GHz with the dGPU. :)

I wouldn't say the r15 eclipses the 17. I bought a mid 2014 r15 and I still jealously look over at my 2011 17 that my wife now uses. Except for resolution I just find it to be a better looking display. So much brighter. 17" at 1920x1200 is the absolute perfect setup for working on two documents side by side. Genuinely considering selling the r15 and upgrading to ssd in the old 17. Only thing holding me back is am enjoying the extra graphical grunt of the 750m.

I would buy a r17 in a heartbeat.

I'd buy it.

Love my late '13 15" MBP, it's a beast, but I'd have much preferred a 17" with an insane 3840x2400 res. In turn, the 15" really ought to have been 3360x2100, so the equivalent of ye old 1680x1050. The doubled 1440x900 equivalent on the 15" is too big really, but I don't want to use a scaled res.

Since this is a minority Apple could have a made-by-request service so that we could order for example a 17" rMBP and they wouldn't have to keep a stock in physical stores, but we all know this is not happening anytime soon.

There is a difference

...or should I put on my tin foil hat?

If there wasn't a difference workstation parts wouldn't exist. You just got unlucky and that generation probably had something that was really faulty.

Only if your tinfoil hat is workstation grade.
I work at a car dealer (MB/BMW/Ford/Chrysler/Mitsu/Mazda), and there are parts that are identical for both the C300 and CL55 AMG, yet they have different part numbers.

I never said Mac boards were perfect, you people always say that.
My problem was I bought a supposedly workstation class Machine (Dell M6500) and blew through three boards. I used to fix laptops and the only difference in these awesome workstation machines was airflow.

I've owned two 17" MacBook Pro. I would really love a Retina model with a 4K panel. Or in-fact just another 17" with a 1920x1200 panel but updated internals would be enough for me to be honest.

I don't think Apple is interested though. I'm sure many people who wanted another 17" have already compromised on a 15" rMBP.

Yes please.

It makes sense that a company that made the world care about high quality screens would come out with this model.

And, I want one.
