Looks like I got it narrowed down to the following 4:

Scorpio Black 7200 320 GB
Scorpio Blue 5400 500 GB
Seagate Momentus 7200.3
Seagate Momentus 7200.4

What should I do?

P.S.: As far as someone mentioning clicking in WD - didn't the firmware update that Apple recently issued fix that issue?

I do believe that if you go back and read replies to your own thread that I posted benchmarks for the Scorpio Blue and jmxp69 did for Seagate. The Scorpio Blue is very close. I also posted a link to Tom's Hardware that directly compared the drives:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/scorpio-notebook-hdd,2109-2.html

I don't think the Blue had issues w. firmware, it was the Seagates. I've had the stock drive, Scorpio Black, Scorpio Blue and now an Intel X25 in my baseline 13MBP without any problems with any of them.

I have an X25M SSD in the main HDD bay, and a 7200.4 Seagate in an Optibay, couldn't be happier. The 7200rpm drive made nary a noise or vibration. This is the model without the built-in G-Force sensor, though.

I have a question, does the HDD spin all the time in the optibay config? I'm planning on doing a similar project but am curious if the HDD spins constantly or only when needed/addressed.

7200 drives - some are great, some not. Luck of the draw and I can get pretty unlucky at times.

Does any one know if a WD 7200 500 is coming out any time soon?

That's something I'm interested in too... whether the optibay drive can be either manually or automatically spun down, to save battery life....

I'm pretty sure it would act like a normal drive in there. Spinning all the time, unless the system decides to turn it off do to inactivity.

Both the WD blue, and Seagate 7200.4 are great drives. I went with the 7200.4 and could not be happier. Got about a 100% increase in drive performance. And if you install it properly you should have almost no noticeable increase in vibration or noise from the drive.

I think it will spin depending on how you access your data. I put my documents, downloads, pictures, etc. in the hard disc, and nothing much else. If I don't access my data, the drive actually sleeps and spins down (due to the energy saver settings to sleep the drive). Pretty cool if you ask me.

Ahh CRAP, looks like replacing a HDD in the previous generation MBPs will VOID WARRANTY........::mad:

So I guess I won't risk voiding my AppleCare which expires end of 2011!!! Ahhhhh......

On my previous MBP I replaced the hard drive. However, I kept the OEM HD loaded with a clean install and an "apple" account. If I needed to take the laptop in for repair, i just swapped the OEM drive back in again.

Help me out here...

I put the 7200.4 into my 13" MBP two months ago and there is absolutely nothing to be noticed in the way of vibrations. There also are not any performance or noise issues.

If you really do have vibrations then you have a defective unit or you are just incredibly freaking anal (which seems to be a common trait on this forum).

The 7200.4 is an excellent drive. Get one and don't look back. By the time you get done reading all of the whining on here you could have put one in and checked for yourself.

Alright so eventually it came down to Scorpio Blue 500 GB and Seagate momentus 7200.4 500 GB. Due to much negative feedback Seagate received on sites like Newegg, I decided not to want to take a risk on it and settled for the slightly slower Scorpio Blue. I do hope I made the right decision and won't get burned.

So I pulled the trigger on the Amazon $89.99 deal along with Snow Leopard for $24.99 + FREE shipping. I guess I got a pretty decent deal.

Be grateful of what? Having ordered Scorpio Blue 500 GB? Btw, what drive was your XBench test performed on?? Scorpio Blue 250 GB?

After reading this thread, i did some research, with the optibay option installed, its possible to have 2x 500GB 7200 drives installed, correct? how much would the battery suffer with that configuration?

Hmmm...Hope i ordered the right one

I just went online yesterday to the Apple Website and ordered the new MacBook pro 15" 2.8 with the glossy screen (hoping i don't regret not ordering the matte option), when it came to the hard drive i opted for the 7200 500GB one. However i don't know if the one that apple will install on my MBP going to be the seagate 7200.3 or the seagate 7200.4 that you are all discussing in your posts.

And can someone please tell me that i didn't make a mistake to sticking with the standard configuration. I planning to play a lot of games on my new macbook pro and im hoping the faster HDD helps for a smoother and better gamig experience.

I got my MBP a month ago and the 7200RPM 500 GB drive installed is ST9500420ASG. That's the 7200.4 model.
