Does anyone know (o2/apple/cpw staff) whether or not the white 16gb iphone will be available on friday?
 
No-body knows for sure.

What we do know however, is that, when O2's 'farce of an online pre-order system' went online at 8AM yesterday morning,
'iPhone 3G 16GB White' was not an option.

It's looking doubtful.

There is no real reason NOT to sell White ones on the day of release. I mean that is when the hype will be at the highest. And if they aren’t selling well, when the black ones are all gone and you've been queuing for 8h you just might get a white one instead. 😉

You've answered your own question.
O2 /Apple/ CPW staff will soon know, and you just have to ask them. Maybe we can have a thread specifically to try and get this information -

1) Stock levels by color
2) Stock levels by 16/8Gb size.
3) Stock levels comparing Apple stores, CPW stores and O2 stores...
 
its been pretty well documented around here that there won't be any white iPhones on launch day at O2 or CPW. It wasnt available to pre order yesterday either. I think ivread in one thread that an O2 rep told them that it won't be available in the uk for 2-3 weeks.

But it hasn't been fully confirmed if they will be sold in the apple stores or if indeed any iphones will be sold in apple stores
 
The very first photographs O2 used on their website when the 3G was announced showed both the white and black iPhones…

Those have subsequently been changed to only show the black ones.

It looks like the chances of any white ones being available are slim.
