G4 VS Imac

Hi,

I had a powermac G4 1.33 GIG, 1 gig and then sold it few days ago for 475$ CAD ( Canadian dollars) and bought an Imac 20" 1.83, 1 GIG of ram and I tell you what, I regret it. My previous G4 was much much faster and stable. If I was you, I will consider a G4 with same specification 1.33 GiG ...

Maybe, but still, this powermac G4 was greatm, greater than your killer....that was my exeperience!

Well I'm going to wait until after Christmas and quite possibly until I travel to the US in August - by which time it wouldn't surprise me if the Mac Mini had reached the end of its life (it's been on the cards for a while) and the iMac had undergone an upgrade.

They both offer a pretty sweet deal; the Mac Mini has everything I want and does everything I need all wrapped up in a neat little package, but it doesn't come with any peripherals and also looks slightly more tricky to upgrade as Techguy172 states, but Eidorian disagrees. The iMac has the complete package but system stability bothers me and it is of course more expensive, but I can't help feeling it's a better deal

Whilst we're on the subject of displays I came across the BenQ FP93V for the Mac Mini: http://www.benq.com/products/LCD/?product=599, I know it was released way back in 2005 but has anyone seen one in action?

Apple has never produced a 1.83ghz 20" imac, nor have they produced a 1.33ghz powermac g4 (it would have to be an aftermarket upgrade card).

the only good reason to get a powermac g4 over a mini or imac would be internal storage and expandability. otherwise they don't make much sense i'm afraid. their value is inflated, perhaps because of their 'top of the line' status. if their value was based on performance, you'd be able to get a dual 1.42 for less than a mini.

I can see where you guys are coming from with the Mac Mini, but you cannot deny that the G4 in all its bubble-like goodness looks damn sexy! (or maybe it's just me )

DVD authoring and encoding will be faster on MacBook than PowerMac G4.

However, it's great for a server. I have one with a few TB of storage space, along with a gigabit ethernet network. =)

Yup, there is no 1.33 PowerMac from Apple.

Funny thread I must admit. I've got a DP G4 1.25... I can't run it in the summer because it heats up my apartment... In fact it fried a video card and had to get an ATI that doesn't perform half as well as the stock Nvidia. Anyway, my newer MacMini G4 still performs better in most things, and produces no heat. The new Intel 2 Core Duo or what ever they are now is 3 x as fast with even less heat. Storage? Use the extra money in buying some firewire drives from Lacie or G-Technologies and be happier about it. My DP G4 Mirror is unplugged propping up some files in the corner... Next to my other G4, next to my other couple G3's and G4... FINALLY GOT RID OF THE BEIGE MONSTERS! but yeah... Get the mini, or better yet, the new macbook. The macbooks just upped it's video card and other minor tweaks... pretty nice for $1,199!

How the hell are you doing that? I had nine HD's in a Sawtooth case -- I ripped out the DVD and Zip drives and I still had to run it with the case open and the power supply lying out behind it. There just wasn't enough room in it. I ended up getting this case and I still had to get a 3-in-2 rack and a 4-in-3 rack (Lian Li 5.25"->3.5" brackets w/ fans). Not to mention 2x120mm and 3x80mm fans, a new power supply, four power splitter cables, eight molex power & SATA -> SATA cables, room for the PCI RAID card and to route the cables, etc.

Of course, I guess you could have just thrown a couple big SATA drives in without much modification at all, in which case I humbly withdraw my "WTF."

There are 6 drive slots in my PowerMac G4.

4 on the bottom of the case (three trays, 2 trays hold 1 drive each, one tray holds 2 drive), 1 DVD drive which can be removed, (useless for server, I also have external firewire DVD drive and external firewire drive), 1 space under CD drive (HD in this bay can't seem to be mountable?). Total 6 internal spots without modifications.

PowerMac comes with IDE which supports 4 drives. I have a PCI SATA card with 4 ports. There are 3 PCI slots if I remember correctly, so you can potentially run SATA to another case with its own power supply.

My PowerMac is a dual processor so it might come with a larger power supply than single processor models.

Currently running with 5 drives. 500gb have been around $100 now, but 750gb is getting to the same price per gb range. Have not tried 1tb. Might have to read up on power supply rating before trying with 6 x 1tb drives.

I see a WFT retraction coming =p

As I said, Apple has never produced a 1.83ghz 20" imac

Oops my bad.

^ "Whenever" being the operative word! I was at the Apple Store today and saw a Mini stacked on top of an Iomega MiniMax and hooked up to a 20" display, looked pretty sweet!
