Hey bigjnyc, I really feel for you. An MBP is a big investment and it sucks to have to consider dropping a boatload of your own money for some a**hat's carelessness.

Should you end up paying for the repair yourself, it's been mentioned previously to buy a replacement screen off eBay ($300 or less) then replace it yourself. It's time-consuming, but not technically challenging if you have worked on laptops before. There is an excellent walk-through at www.ifixit.com, those guys have been my saviors.

Best of luck.

great website! thanks jabber, I'm definitely adding to my bookmarks as i feel that i'm going to need it soon.

P.S. MacHappytjg, maybe if you learn to type in English and use punctuation, people might not think you are a moron.

:D ^^^ Quote of the day material! ^^^ Personally I would have added something about staying on topic too though!

Best of luck the OP! Sure they do the right thing and take responsibility for the staff's lack of care. Might not make you a customer for life, but might at least keep you from never considering them again for a place to stay!

You know the old business axiom- a satisfied customer will tell three friends about their good experience, but a non-satisfied one will tell everyone they pass about their experience.

On a MBP note - the aluminium cases are supposed to be less durable (dent more) than the plastic.

And yes, that really sucks. I'd go nuts if that happened to me, especially because my macbook is the only computer I own.

My Gibson RB-250 banjo "vanished" from the luggage storage of the Ritz-Carleton in Atlanta several years ago. I was stunned when the manager suggested I contact my home owner's carrier and file a claim .Someone walking off with a banjo is pretty darned hard to miss and I suggested he rethink his position. In the midst of the conversation which was turning ugly fast, the banjo in question magically reappeared! They compted my room and I have never left anything of value in the care of hotel staff again. I never check my BlackBook or any camera. My philosophy is that if an item will cost more than a grand to replace, keep it close while traveling.
I hope the hotel pays for the damage to your MB without a fight.

Thanks guys i'm still waiting to hear back from them with my fingers crossed. If i dont hear anything by tomorrow i will give their claims department a call. The macbook is my only computer as well, luckily i use it in clamshell mode at home most of the time, but i do like to use it in laptop mode around the house and travel with it so i really hope they own up.

I hate those people who type stupidly....

And are you saying that the iBook is high quality? A macbook beats the quality of that ANY day.

Actually my iBook is very durable. It survived a 4 1/2 foot drop to concrete, with just the case popping apart. All I had to do was push it back! Just matters how it lands I suppose.

***UPDATE****

great news guys i just got a call from the hotel and they told me that they would be cutting me a check for a new macbook. I guess there must have been some compelling evidence on that tape. so tomorrow i have to fax over my receipt and they will cut me a check, then when i get a new one and migrate my files i have to send them the old one. (wish i could have kept it lol)

anyways this is great news :D

I'm going to take this opportunity to buy an iMAC with the check i get. i'll be picking up a macbook when the new revisions come out.

I'm happy that things worked out for you. I would have been pretty ticked off too if this happened to me. In the future, please don't check-in your MacBook, unless you have access to a locker where you can personally place the notebook in and lock it. In doing so, you'll save yourself a lot of hassle.

yeah after this experience albeit with a positive ending, i will definitely adhere to this advice going forth. next time i may not be so lucky.

It sickens me how much Apple charge to replace faulty items.

They charge just below what it would cost you to just buy a new machine...

It takes some doing to crack a screen. Somebody must have thrown it around.
I suggest using a padded neoprene type case (not sure if incase you had was).
It will absorb a lot of mild abuse.

Hey that's awesome news.

They must have found somebody bloody guilty of mishandling the baggage. You probably just cost them their job. I hope you're happy.:p;)

Glad it turned out for the best. I would never, ever leave my computer in someone's unknown hands like that. Besides the value of the hardware which I don't mind replacing, the digital fingerprint on your computer has far more reaching consequences. Email info., personal info., keychains, data, pictures - too much to leave in the hands of anyone but trusted people or locked up. Call me paranoid but I've seen too many bad things happen to computers & ipods carelessly left to chance.

Yeah, I guy I know had a 2007 Audi A4, and smashed it into a tree and totaled it. I'll never own one of those...or a tree for that matter...

???? What the f&^k are you drinking!!!?

Speaking of which I took my car in for service, shop ran it into another car and had to replace the entire front except the engine; yeah it can be bad, but of course you're making it up and I'm not.
