iPad without a doubt, have a 3 year old nephew who loves to play on my iPad and loves the fun kid games.

But to be honest, get the kid some toys or a mini car he can drive and enjoy the nature.

Get him the MBA. Then set the timer on your iPhone and time how long it will take him to break the hinges off :D:D

my mate's son is three and plays on they bought him an ipod touch and he loved it, but coz it's small, he tended to throw it sometimes as children do.

my mate also has an ipad which he hesitantly let the child play with and coz it's big and heavy (but not too heavy that the child will drop it) he doesn't throw it and seems to prefer playing on it more than the ipod touch or iphones that they have

i think an ipad is a great way for kids to learn, and there are plenty of educational games etc in the app store that they can really benefit from it

good one gramps!

I vote rubber ball and sunshine.

I drove through my old neighborhood a week ago.

the flashbacks of the neighborhood playing baseball, street hockey, hide and seek, capture the flag, the trees that we climbed, and so on. oh the memories.

Do kids still do those sort of things?

OP if you feel obligated to purchase such a device I would go with a macbook, but if its a toy you are looking for then a pad.

Kids these days text each other and play Halo.

A lot of people make the argument that it's good to expose kids to as much technology as possible as early as possible, because they will be ahead of the curve in know-how.

But look at us...we had rubber balls to play with when we were kids, and we are no worse off. I know my tech gear in and out just like the guys on any tech blogs, and I had a normal childhood playing outside. If the kid is interested in the stuff, he will learn about it when he wants to, and he will learn if he wants to, just as we did.

If anything forcing technology on him would likely lead him to be an overweight shut-in with horrible lifestyle and hygiene habits...

Let's not take the hollier than thou road though, because it's probably sadder that adults do these things too. In any case I essentially agree, but I don't think it's what the op intended and unfortunately this site doesn't have an appropriate forum I guess for this discussion.

ok, ok. gee, you're busting my nuts.

truth be told: it is NOT appropriate or sensible to give a 3 yr old a tablet or laptop or electronic device.

research have proven that painting with brush for instance is 4 times better learning and motor skills wise than painting with say a wacom. builds more neural networks/creativity and in the context of a class, helps builds social skills

my earlier posts were not meant to be condescending. but is the truth to what 'some' or a proportion of kids (not marginal) these days are exposed to via all manner of technology available to them. and some parents are guilty of not reigning in their access to them.

Not iPad

Way too much of the stuff on the Web for kids, especially sports oriented kids, is flash based. So I would go with an Air. Plus if he wants to eventually program there is so much more stuff.

I don't care what the OP said. It's stupid to give an expensive computer to a 3 year old. This is the internet and if you don't like the opinion of others, then go live in your own walled garden. The internet is in your face and uncensored! Deal with it.

An expensive electronic item isn't going to replace time and love. Also agree plopping a child in front of a screen isn't the best way to raise your kids.

I think its silly to give an ipad or a mba to a 3 year old (or 4 you said a year later)

Just my opinion... extremely expensive kit, 3/4 year olds dont need that stuff at that age...

Just my opinion though..

Bit like on the film Bruno where he swaps the kid for a iPod then shows him on some random American talk tv programme with a Netbook and iPhone or whatever it was :p

Definitely an iPad. Loading it with some games appropriate for his age would offer a great user experience for him.

Get an iPad for Mom/Dad.

Buy the grandson a $25-50 iTunes gift card, so GS can pick a couple games, educational stuff...

He can play with it if he's good and listening to the parents.
