I want to stay logged into adium whilst the computer is locked

Enable fast-user-switching via the Accounts pane of System Preferences.

Choose "Login Window..." from the FUS menu (which will show the name of the current user in the menubar). This will return you to the Login Window, while your account remains logged in, with the apps running.

It's much more secure than the screensaver.
