I want to use my rMBP screen as a second screen.

And hook it up to my iMac. I went on youtube and they said to get a thunderbolt cable, but the videos were about 2-3 years old. Does this still apply?

Tomorrow, I will be heading over to the Apple store, hopefully I'll get a response tonight!

Note that the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014) does not support Target Display Mode.

Well you won't be able to use your MacBook's display as a second monitor...but older generations of 27-inch iMacs were able to be used as a second display to your MacBook.

It is not possible to use a a rMBP in target display mode. There are other options such as screen sharing but they aren't nearly as smooth. It's a bummer for me because I would like to use a 15'' rMBP as a display for my iMac as well 🙁
