Based on the posts here and the Apple Support forum (there's a 200+ page thread about it there), it's a widespread issue with the MBP16.

People are 'fixing' it by disabling their CPU turbo boost and running only in clamshell mode with external keyboard and mouse.

That's unacceptable to me. When i pay $4,500 for a laptop, i expect it to work well, especially with modest, everyday kind of tasks like video conferencing. I want to have use the internal screen and an external monitor at the same time. I want to be able to use the keyboard, trackpad and speakers i paid for - not be forced to slow down my computer and purchase external peripherals to make it work.
Blame crappy MacOS codec support or coding with the video conferencing software as all mbp run hot with those apps. Even my 2020 mbp 13 i7 10th gen with 10nm chip will run loud while using zoom.

You’re probably going to have to wait for ARM Macs.

I gave up and use my 2018 iPad Pro for video conferencing. At least it’s dead silent and has better mics and camera blows away all current mbp

After reading and watching many reviews of the new MB 16” I was under the impression this was Apple back on form and I was ready to submit my order.

However my final research spot was right here on MacRumors and now I’m slightly worried.

I’m seeing quite a few scary threads focused on cooling, external monitors (that I don’t plan on using), audio popping, and other things.

Is this laptop really plagued with issues? Are there any owners here happy with their purchase / with no major issues?

For reference I am looking at the base model with 5500M and 1TB SSD upgrades. Usage mainly focused on photo and video editing.

You totally missed the item that Macs are all moving to ARM CPUs so no more Intel.

I have the fully maxed out 16" MBP and love it. The only issue I had was gaming with Boot Camp on windows. So I don't even really know if that's worth mentioning. But if this is one of your areas of concern feel free to PM me and I can give you a synopsis of my weeks of research lol

Bottom line: I was between a half-maxed out 13" or fully maxed out 16" and happy I spent the extra $$

Edit: I do echo the obnoxious fan noise, but, that's not a deal-breaker for me? I use airpods for zoom calls which do a fine job at tuning it out and keeping my other participants from hearing. When I game, same thing. Use headphones so it doesn't bother me.

Is it loud without them though, 100%.

were you able to bootcamp and play games without a lot of issues? I am looking to play warzone with a xbox controller under bootcamp.

Currently trialing a 16" i9 w/ 5500m. I'm leaning towards sending it back because of the fan noise and heat when plugged into my external monitors. I can reproduce it on a fresh install of macOS. GPU is using 20w without anything happening on-screen.

Anybody who pays $2k+ for a broken computer is a sucker. Never buy anything with the promise that the party who sold it to you will “fix it later”.

Fwiw I’m not happy to be saying this, I’m in serious need of a new Mac and love almost everything else about the 16” MBP.

I’m able to play Jedi knight fallen order on mine with Xbox one wireless controller and dongle in bootcamp. Works great. Of course I run it at 1080 and turn down the eye candy. I have the 5500m and wish I got the 5600 as it’s much faster. It’s also loud playing games but all pc gaming laptops are loud too.
