When the news of the m2 came out. I made a post stating the m2 is just the m1.5 because they had not decreased the nm size at all. I watched video reviews on YouTube stating the speed of the m2 would be worse than m1 due to the solid-state drive being slower. This reaffirmed my feelings and I considered going for the 14" m1 Pro. My wife has one and it is a really impressive laptop.

Then tax free shopping came and it made the incentive for <$1500 laptop even more enticing. I decided to trade in my m1 air and get the m2 air base model.

TLDR: The m2 air base model is a beast. It is VERY FAST, noticeably more so than the m1 air and even feels faster than my wife's 14" m1 pro (in regards to opening apps, speed of loading internet pages, back and forth between different things). Clearly the 14" m1 pro will be faster when it comes to editing video in Final Cut Pro, but honestly something about the m2 feels right. For instance, everyone knows that when Apple switched from x86 to Arm processors they had to package all the software using Rosetta 2. With the m1 on my air and even my wife's m1 pro, there is a slight delay when opening up different programs. That delay appears to be gone completely and everything just loads instantly.

I also am really impressed with the build quality of the Air m2. It feels like my wife's 14" m1 pro, but thinner, but somehow more solid/dense. It feels much higher quality than my previous air m1. It feels like a $2000-$3000 laptop.

So anyway, I was wrong in my original disdain for the m2. I originally felt Apple should have scaled down the build to 4nm or even 3nm, but after actually using it, I am very impressed by what Apple has accomplished.
Which base the 8/256?

I'm sitting here with a new MBA (10/16/512) and a base 14" MBP.
I'm trying to decide which to keep. The MBP is $270 more than the MBA the way I have the MBA spec'd.
It comes down to solely the screen potential of the MBP and the better sound as I will likely never do intensive work that would make the MBP outperform the MBA.

I gotta say... it's a TOUGH call. I don't know what I'm going to do. The screen is definitely better on the MBP and so is the sound, but for $270? Worth it to me? I don't know yet! Ugh. lol. Modern-day-1st-world-problem I know...

The advanatages to the MBA besides the $270 it saves is that the portability of the MBA is noticeably better as well... plus I like Starlight. The MBA just begs to be taken out with me and somewhat cannibalizes my iPad. I could sell my iPad now and that makes this even cheaper!

I have a week or so more to decide.

Once you send one of them back you'll only have the other one, and you won't be comparing them any more. I'm sure either one will keep you happy in the long run.

Could you provide any insight on the difference between the screen of your M1 Air vs your M2? is the added brightness/contrast noticeable? any other differences?
Best Buy here and Costco have both on display. There is a pretty decent difference between the two screen wise imo. The m2 mba sits much closer to the 14 pro but isn’t quite as good. Much closer though.

People seem to miss the point that everybody who purchases the M2 MBA will see the benefit of the portable form factor every single day but the benefit of the 14"s extra performance only in very specific scenarios. The smaller form factor is a quality of life improvement that you'll reap the benefits from every single time you use it. That in itself is "value for money".

So, unless you have very specific needs or you're the type to only have your laptop plugged in (as size doesn't matter when it's only being used as a desktop replacement) - the MBA, even when upgraded, will be the best option for the vast majority of people.

To be fair the benefits of the MBP aren't just confined to the higher performance. It's also the screen and speakers which you'll benefit from every single day.

I personally can't get over how ugly the 14 and 16 pro are. The thickness looks like a 10 yr old Powerbook. I am sorry.

I think the 16” especially is a beautiful combination of all of Apple’s previous designs - it has elements of my Al & Ti G4s, the original Retina MacBook Pros, and in Space Gray, the tbMBPs. It’s also slightly lighter than the original Retina Pros as well, which I find interesting.

Saw the Air in person, however, and if I didn’t really need 32GB of RAM and more displays (plus ProMotion which is really nice) I honestly would’ve entertained trading in my 16” for a fully specced Air. Beautiful design, especially in Starlight (Midnight looks nice but even the brand new display model had chips around the MagSafe port).

I think the new 16 and 14 will be much thinner i bet!!!!!!!

Just got my 24GB/1TB yesterday. When I left for work, it was still downloading stuff. I will have time tonight to finish configuring it for work on Friday. So far, it seems flawless but I haven't had much chance to work with it yet.
Mine's on a UPS flight somewhere still... :clock-ticking:

Honestly, only Apple releasing a new processor could have someone say : the update isn't big enough to be called V2.0.

It's like people want it to be so big they have a reason to take out their wallet and update. Every time a new gen of Intel was announced, nobody would say such thing, and you know Intel had minor releases between 2012 and 2021.

I agree with everything the original poster says. As an owner of both an M2 Air & 14" MBP, I feel the M2 Air is just a bit quicker with every day tasks like opening apps, new tabs, safari surfing. It's a joy to use honestly and I have zero complaints. And the weight makes it more comfortable to use over the 14" particularly when on your lap / tummy. I've just formatted the 14" and readying it to go on eBay this weekend. Won't miss it at all.

M2 MBA 10/24/2

I’ve owned many laptops, metal alloy objects (cyberdyne 101) and miscellaneous memorabilia and this is the pinnacle for me.

Impossibly light and thin, lightning speed in real world tasks, no fan or moving parts, spacious and ramacious, light, thin (repetition for appropriate weighting) silent AND deadly. Unlike other sbds this one will also win beauty pageants.

The greatest laptop ever made so far. Bar none? Perhaps. Bar some? Arguable. This is all purely subjective.

And the best part? I was right. I knew it would be. I knew. But kudos to OP for the brass balls.

I think that's part of why the Air exists. I love the MBP form factor-- it's a tool and it's designed to be used. I moved from an older 15" to the 16" Max, so the size didn't change much, but it got heavier-- but it got heavier because they designed and filled the space with battery.

I guess if I just wanted a machine for web apps and Word, I'd go with the Air. It would be lighter in the backpack, for sure.

Just initiate the return on Apple’s website on the 14th day and that will buy you another 2 weeks to decide. As long as FedEx gets your package by the 14th day after you initiate your return you are good. I did that with my studio display when I decided I wanted the VESA mount instead of the height adjustable stand.
Do you all have even the slightest grasp of how wasteful your practices are? Buying multiple machine ‘just to try’ : the energy consumed during shipping, packaging needing to be re-done… whatever happened to going to the store, making a choice and living with that choice like a grown up?

whatever screen size you use and are comfortable with is the winner. i lived 6 years on a 12" macbook, comfortably. my ex (well, my ex ex ex) loved her 11" air. a collab has the 16" MBP, and loves that.

there's no one rule for everyone...
there's more than size

Also, i was at best buy couldnt believe how many laptops were as thin as the air (samsund, lenovo) etc.. kinda crazy
Yup. The original MacBook Air jump started the ultrabook concept, and the ultra portable form factors are a dime a dozen nowadays, especially after the PC OEMs embraced dropping optical drives and went SSD. Some are even lighter than the MacBook Air. Hardware design wise, everybody’s catching up. The remaining liability is x86 poor performance per watt.

How dare you! My 16" is beautiful! 🤣

To be fair I did replace a 10-year old 17" one so maybe you have some kind of point, but that's only because I was waiting for one that first could match 4TB of storage like I had in the old one (removeable drive and removeable DVD for a 2x2TB), then wasn't thermal throttling badly, or had hardly any IO, or a crap keyboard. Finally the intel 16" got pretty good looking so I nearly got that, but then I heard the ARM rumours and figured I'd wait a little longer. The M1 looked great, so waited more for the larger pro, then finally after *forever* the 16" M1 Max came out which I've been delighted by. I've used plenty of the in-between era Macs (just not owned one personally), but don't find them at all "prettier", just they have sharper less flowing lines and sometimes less comfortable edges and were more frustrating that they were sub-par machines in one way or another, or in my mind un-necessarily thin for a hit on performance.

Keep thin for the Air, and Pro machines for performance. Not have a pointless Air where a load of Pro ones are almost the same thinness and performance suffers for it.

I’ve had a few instances where FedEx had it in time but Apple return expired and a refund wasn’t processed. Fixed with a few phone calls to Apple but not quite as easy

Agreed. I ended up deciding on the MBA. The screens are close enough for every day use... only really shines when I do HDR content which isn't often enough to off-set the better battery on the MBA and the portability. Additionally, a lot of my actions leverage single core speed more than multi core and the M2 feels a bit faster as a result.

Behave yourself the MBP is pure sex!, having said that I’m ordering one tomorrow and I may now cancel that plan and go for an M2 Air in midnight

FYI: There is no 10 year old Powerbook the last Powerbooks were sold until 2006. The thinnest of them, the 17", was 2.6 cm. The currently thickest MacBook Pro is 1.68 cm. The 12" Powerbook was even 3 cm think and the current 14" is 1.55 cm. So I would say the Powerbook was massively thinker than the MacBook Pro now.

not if you care about PWM, the Air M2 is flicker-free
Yeah that is something that is weird. On my wife’s 14” m1 pro the screen gives me a weird feeling. Interestingly i don’t get that feeling with my 12” iPad Pro m1. I’m not sure if they have different settings for pwm
