I seriously don't see the issue. FYI, the alarm app still sounds just as loud with the silent ringer switch on as without. As for getting calls, get people to call urgent and important calls in the middle of the night to your home phone.

Problem solved.

But it would be nice to have 'profiles' just as I had on my old Nokia dumbphone from 6 years ago.

FWIW, we don't have a "home" phone.

As a college student who hasn't had a "home" phone since I lived with my parents over 5 years ago, I can tell you that the "home" phone is dying. I personally will never again have a landline phone. Why pay the monthly charge for a landline when you already have a cell phone that goes with you everywhere?

Ok, I know a landline is required for some security systems and whatnot, but I would guess that most people will not have a landline in 10 years.

Sorry , but I have no idea what you all are talking about .... I put my iphone every single night on silent modus ( left hand side top switch ) and my alarm works like a charm .

I don´t hear e-mails or SMS´s or calls unless ( for the last one ) I allow it to vibrate .

Have you ever tried out ?
Saludos

What do you do in a large home? I personally would feel like running around looking for my cell phone.

My family doesn't have a homeline. I am a college student, so I am rarely home, but my mother, sister, and father all have cell phones. We realized that we were always talking on our cell phones even when we were at home/receiving cell calls even when we were at home so decided to drop the extra payment.

The lack of "Alarm Only" mode is my biggest iPhone complaint now. I hate the text or email going off in the middle of the night. Though I can sleep through the email now, the text wakes me up every time.

Too bad there isn't a "bedside mode" like on Blackberries.

I wouldn't use it at home as I have an alarm clock and keep my iPhone attached to my PC every night. But on the road, this would be a useful feature. I don't like having apps to do things that should be standard. Not a big 3rd Party guy.

I have pretty good luck with the vibrate toggle switch -- a lot easier than on my old Razr, that's for sure.

Simply be more organized. You can apply the same principal of a large home to looking for your keys. Do you run around looking for your keys all the time?

Most organized people will have a home for their iPhone. There's a dock on my bedside table where my iPhone sits whenever I'm home.

As for the OP's request, your itemized list (SMS and email notifications off; phone ringer on, alarm on) can be achieved by simply plugging in headphones.

I simply put my phone on silent before going to bed.

It has nothing to do with being organized, IMHO. I don't want to be running up and down stairs to get the phone in my bedroom.

I just want to filter out all rings except for my best friend, and family members in case there is an emergency during the night hours

Now we wouldn't want that to happen wouldn't we?

The silent ringer switch works fine for me as well, I guess I sleep like the dead. :p

THere was a cool program for the Treo line that would look at the calendar and could mute the ringer or other sounds during meetings. I think this would be a great feature for the iPhone as well.

Where do you keep you home phone? Put it in the most convenient place for you or carry it around.

He's talking about living in a place that's bigger than a bread box. :)

The idea of carrying around your cell phone all day/night in a multi-room, perhaps multi-story home, just to avoid having a landline, really isn't much fun.

In many homes, there's a landline phone in every bedroom, the kitchen, home office, living room, perhaps the garage and basement, and who knows where else.

One middle option is to get one of those adapters where you plug in your cell phone, and the landline phones in the house use it remotely.

What's important about a landline in the home is if you ever need 911 (in the US) calling from your landline will direct the call to your closest police station and transmit your address: in the event you are unable to speak, or someone forces you to hang up.

Using your cel-phone to call 911, in most cases will get you through to the CHP (in california) and they would have to then manually transfer your call. And the cel-phone is not easy to trace, if someone were not allowing you to speak... Not too efficient in an emergency situation.

So, if you can afford it at all, keep the landline....
