I was playing some iOS game (VainGlory, (Ringo hybrid build)) and I tried to raise the volume like halfway through a mission and I accidentally put force in a parallel way from the other side and closed my game out :(

Agree. I wish they would have switched places with the sim tray. I hit it accidentally all the time, especially when trying to control the volume.

But if they do that, my right thumb (and presumably many other people's) would be on the button all the time. Do you think it's a good idea? Would one more likely to push a button that way?

I would hate that. Accidentally pressing buttons when I pick up a phone is irksome. I do it with the HTC M8.

I wouldn't think so. How much pressure are you putting on it with your right thumb? I honestly don't know because I use mine left handed.

I do hold mine left handed half of the time so for me it's 50/50. We can probably agree that there are people who hold the phone with their right hand.

For those people, I can see 2 complaints:

1) accidental push - if your thumb is on it, chances are when you increase the pressure (walking, jumping over puddles, not wanting to drop the phone) you may push the power button accidentally.

2) constantly feel the power button when you hold the phone - it's a little bump and doesn't feel as nice as a solid side.

I have a Tech21 case, and due to the silent switch cut out I don't do that.

What I have done is accidentally pressed power when I wanted to press a volume button to take a photo.

Do you only have one hand? Why does every button need to be within reach at all times? Some parts of the screen aren't.

Yes. When you're walking through an airport dragging a case behind you - you only have one free hand.

Plenty of other similar use cases.

Well for the miniscule number of occasions I would be forced to use my 6+ one handed, I would gladly take the trade-off of not accidentallty pressing a hardware button every single time I pick the device up. I can't believe that people are moaning about power button placement. I hardly ever press my power button and the ability to have it under my thumb at all times is simply not a requirement. I would be quite happy to have it on top and or out of the way but where it is positioned on my 6+ is perfectly fine. Lower would be annoying.

My apologies. Thought we were talking about on-screen buttons.

Power button belongs on top! No argument.

I didn't use the power button as much until the iPhone 6. Now I find myself using it to turn off the screen regularly to save battery, avoid accidental push, and for privacy. I always wanted to do that, but didn't want to bother with the hassle of reaching power button at the top.

So for me the new location of the power button is great.

Totally agree.

The position of the side power button on the iPhone 6 is annoying

This have been bothering me since I got my iPhone 6+ and I just had to post it somewhere, more as a therapy than with the hope of trying to find a solution, because obviously there is none unless Apple decides to change the position on a future model. I just have to learn to live with it.

I find myself always pressing the volume buttons on the other side when trying to turn off the screen of the iPhone. Pressing the volume controls actually blocks the power button action so you have to re-press the power button one more time. Annoying!

I have to consciously think on what I am doing every time I press the power button, not like with the iPhone 5 or 4 where this action was just a reflex. The position on the side just makes that your right thumb is always placed over the volume buttons when you are going to use the power one if you are using your left hand to hold the iPhone.

I never had a problem like this on previous models where the power button was placed on the top side.

I think that the opinion of the posters that say that it will be difficult to reach the power button with just one hand on the 6+ if it was located on the top is something that deserves attention too. But I have run some tests myself holding the phone with just one hand and it is feels very natural to use the index finger to reach the position on top where the button would be theoretically placed. i am using the Apple leather case.

I think that Apple should run some test with a sizable customer base to find if moving the power button to another place would improve things. Or at least that pressing volume does not block the power button on the 6+ so it still works, even if you accidentally have also pressed one of the volume buttons. This could maybe be fixed with a software update?

They likely did run a number of user studies which concluded that overall the location of the button should be where it is. It's certainly possible that a few had issues with it of some sort, but in the overall sense most didn't (compared to other locations essentially) and that's why it's there.

Oooh nice one. I can relate to that one.

Its also better for taking screen shots when it was on top because it was more symmetrical to the pressure we exert from the bottom whilst pushing the main button. Now its like the bottom button area acts as a pivot, and then we exert force from one side, and you have to hold the other, so you essentially have to put pressure on three elements simultaneously, all the while also avoiding the volume buttons.

I often accidentally turn off the phone when attempting to take a screen shot. I thought it was a learning curve/force of habit at first, but Im still doing it to this day and have to focus pretty hard to time it right. This never happened before.

......best thing to do is turn the 'Accessibility' feature on. You'll get a round icon on your screen (which you can place anywhere) - when you tap on it, you'll get additional options. One of these is to take a screenshot - tap on the 'screenshot' icon and you're done! ;)

Yes, I am sure they did. I can't imagine with billions of dollars riding on the iPhone that they did not do extensive user studies.

My Iphone 5s is my first smartphone, and my biggest single complaint is the position of the lock screen button. I use my phone right handed, and a top mount position would have been better on the left side rather than the current right side. However, it seems to me that the perfect location would have been on the right side of the phone towards the top of the phone, which is where it is on the current Iphone 6, I think? Anyway, love my 5s, and I just deal with button placements.:)
