Even if you need media storage, no way you can watch it or use all of it at one time, that much storage is still useless on the device itself unless you are editing tons of video or doing tons of graphic intensive things that require that kind of storage...I'm just happy that I have 1 TB onedrive cloud storage, 50 GB box storage, and 19 GB from google cloud. At least it's accessible when I need it and it's not taking my iPad pros storage ....the cloud is making high native storage requirements pointless.

For you it is useless. For some of us it would be helpful. Not all of us have the same needs. I for one could use more space on it for work related media, and such.

Sadly it's all about cost -- in terms of physical space pretty much all of these devices could fit well more than 1TB with current chip density (the iPP could probably fit terabytes!). But yes, I would expect to see 256GB devices released this year.

In the iOS realm there is a growing scourge....the cloud people. this person seems to like pulling from 3 clouds. I see organizational mess personally but to each their own.

that and not all are lucky to have unlimited/high value data plans. I reach 7 gb allotted by plane I start to pay big money personally. My wife keeps this interesting. She doesn't want to follow my basic guidance of don't update unless at the house.

Home use...I could have a 8.1tb ipad. If only it could it talk to my NAS....

He said "making do", not "I've got tons of space, and NEVER have to worry about space".

WOW!! Making fun of someone's financial status.

That's really not cool.
It isn't? Well shoot. I guess you're just gonna have to sit there and be upset about what a stranger on a forum said then

So you think 50 freaking years from now we won't have a 1tb iPad?!

I actually don't, I think wifi speeds will be so fast you won't need that much local storage. Local storage will become tedious in the since that, could you imagine managing 1tb of storage which is most likely duplicative of what you have elsewhere? From an efficiency perspective, the duplicate data is not efficient. Accessing as needed (since you don't need all 1tb at one time) is much more efficient and I think they'll try to increase cloud accessibility. That would be my guess. I'm not saying some people couldn't use it, but that doesn't seem to be where technology is going.

With Apples recent iOS features to "optimize local photos" and Apple Music to replace having to ever purchase music, Adobe Cloud for working on the go, it just all points to that. IMO anyway, but who knows...

I don't think this will ever happen, everyone is all about the "cloud" these days, including Apple. Best bet is one of those wifi drives...

Yeah, you're hosed when you're somewhere where good Internet access is not available. Been on a couple of trips recently where good access was very rarely (if ever) available, including over cellular. I use a wireless filehub that supports attachment of USB drives, including portable HDDs. Because I have more travel coming up where Internet access will not be available, I don't count on cloud services for storage.

Well what you have there is the best of both worlds. A quasi middle cloud with your wifi drives. Local disconnected storage that can work with multiple local devices.

How much internal storage do you need, there are tons of cloud options to get by especially in the future.

In my opinion, people should use there laptops or the cloud to dump all of there stuff on, only your most pertinent files should be on your iPad.

Quite a bit for work. Sometimes cloud is not an option. I use Dropbox, but there are times it isn't accessible. Not everywhere has wifi or good cel service. And for some files/media, constant accessing from the cloud on cellular gets more expensive than adding more storage. Everyone's needs are different...hence the different choices in size and ram for iPads.

I see so many people here and else where say that with the existence of cloud services local storage is not an issue. I don't know where they live but I live in London and even here Wi-Fi network access is not available everywhere. Not to mention I suspect reliance on cloud services too much would also probably reduce battery charge considerably faster too.

I can't use my iPhone's cellular connection with tethering as my plan limits me to 8GB per month. For me having reasonable local storage is a must as I prefer to have all my content at hand rather then having to manage the storage by replacing content at home. That's why I always go with the highest capacity iPad and iPhone. I would gladly welcome a 256GB iPad and would definitely buy one.

We don't share the same opinion. Plus, the telcos are putting the screws on data usage. So the tired "cloud" excuse for the tiny storage, is becoming less and less of a real option every day.

In a perfect world, iPad would have usb. At least the Pro.

A guy can dream

It does have USB, via the lightning port. The limitation is not the physical port, but the operating system. Still, I would rather have 1TB of onboard storage than have the option to have external USB with up to e.g. 8TB. Ultimately I'm not really interested in dealing with carrying all kinds of storage accessories and cables, or getting a fast cellular connection on the move / on the plane, I just want something that works.
