All the time people ask help about their iPhone and I ask them what iPhone it is, they either never know or are wrong. Then you have to spend time going through menus which always change, so it takes much longer than needs to….

Just put the model on the back so people can turn their phone around and tell you….. Would make life so much easier. I don’t understand Apple’s obsession with making their devices harder to use in the name of aesthetics.

Out of genuine curiosity: how often do you feel tempted to ask people about their exact mobile model? 🤓 Or is it some "ice breaker" which works for you? 😃 Or something else?

As someone who uses their phone naked I would not like this at all .. I love Apples clean aesthetics, having the model printed on the back would look horrible and make the iPhone look like some cheap android device.

As far as figuring out the model I'm not sure what you're talking about, it's always been Settings > General > About.... And it's right there 3rd row down. It doesn't get any easier. Also how often are you helping someone with their phone for this to be a burden lol

Apple used to do something along those lines, but never the exact model. Although my 3GS does show the exact amount of storage.

I went from the 6s+ to the Pixel 3a XL and then the 11 Pro Max, so not exactly sure at what model 'iPhone' stopped appearing on the back (along with the regulatory info).

The 4 and 4s are proof that printing on the back glass isn't an issue. I suspect Apple doesn't do this to save embarrassment. You'd never know that the white 4s in my pic is 8GB unless I told you – oops! 😀

Honestly, pretty much everyone I know use cases so I don't think printing the model on the back would make a difference.

I don't need the model name to be placed on the back of my iPhones. As others have posted you can easily tell by going into settings and about to see which model iPhone you're using. In my opinion, there is no need to place the model of the iPhone on the back of the device. Personally, I prefer the cleaner look with just the Apple logo on the back of the device. It is very clean and simple. Looks perfect to me.

Harder to use? What does knowing what model the device is have to do with its use? In fact, why is this something that you find yourself needing to know on a regular basis?

That would only let me get a good look at their case. I don't know a single person who doesn't use a case on an iPhone.

Of course, I would get a look at the camera layout, and that usually helps me determine which model it is.

You are asked for help that often and are helping with stuff that requires knowledge of which phone it is, and are bothered to spend 10 seconds looking it up with like 5 screen taps?

You're right. This is absolutely a problem that Apple needs to address immediately.

I will never understand the appeal of using a phone "naked".

There’s no appeal, I just hate the bulk and feel of cases… and I’m not a klutz who drops his phone so damage has not been an issue for me.
I feel like there would be an issue with scratches and fingerprints everywhere. I use a case, but I make sure to clean it regularly.

I am also not a klutz also but dropping a phone is so common that someday you will also drop yours. Even a cheap case is better than not having one. I spent the last 18 years with a iPhone and I went without a case until I dropped my iPhone 8 when my grandson ran into my arm in a parking lot and shattered my screen. After I spent to get the screen replaced I put a Otterbox defender on it

To be honest what phone someone is using isn't something I care about. Its a tool. I've got better things to focus on than than identifying which iPhone model that is. I don’t think Ive ever noticed what model or brand someone’s using, because it just doesn’t matter to me. It's not a badge, a sigil or a status symbol. It's just a phone.

I actually do get curious when I notice it's not an iPhone, Samsung or Pixel. Other brands seem so rare to see in the US.

I sort of feel this way, but if I don't use a case, the phone feels slick to me. I use rubber/tpu cases. I like the grip they provide and the feel in the hand. I once tried a latercase in hopes that a minimalist case with some texture would work well for me, but it still felt too slick.

Micro scratches that you have to hold the device in strong light in a certain way to see, most likely yes. And fingerprints. One of the first things I had to accept when I started going without cases. A microfiber cloth can take care of that though.

I'd put up any of my caseless phones against anyones cased phone. Do I drop them, yes - from time to time. But in 13 years I've only had to replace two phones. I have rules for myself (only for myself) that involve handling and spatial awareness. But, while they are onerous to case users (I've been told), they keep my caseless phones safe.

The only phone I ever dropped hard enough to cause damage was the iPhone 3G, I was running across the street to beat a light and it flew out of my hand, screen shattered. Ever since then, I’ve had very minor small drops that have caused zero damage. I’ve never used a case and I’m able to sell my phones every year in perfect mint condition….. I do use screen protectors though.

Yes this argument for a case is always two-fold (I've heard many arguments). 1. You too will one day drop your phone. 2. Because of that you will learn your lesson and put your phone in a case.

The only problem with this argument (like many of them) is that accidents happen while phones are cased as well. Phones do get destroyed while in cases. It's less likely to happen, but it does happen.

I've dropped two phones sufficiently to merit replacement. Considering that a lot of case users (but not all) are careless with their phones (because the case protects the phone, so they don't have to think), I'd bet my ratio is pretty good comparatively.

An accident that happens to slip past my personal rules for myself isn't going to all of a sudden change my mind and start having me use cases now.

I don't need a big model name super duper logo type thingee on my phone, but it would be really nice to have a small but clear model name and serial number on the back for SUPPORT reasons.

1. Retail/home user, some people can't figure out what model you are trying to help them with, but could read you a number over the phone. They don't have their paperwork, phone is dead, and they barely can tell you if it's even an Apple or Android.

2. Same customer, but they have vision problems or old eyes: You'd think from an accessibility standpoint, the manufacturer should have to at least make an effort to make the serial number and model number information on a device be clearly readable. Apple, HP, and others are guilty of using super small font and an "ink color" that is barely different from the case color it is printed on.

3. Mass deployment people: In my team at work, we deal with half a dozens to multiple dozens of iPhones at a time. Having them look exactly all the same with no visible ID info is a big pain.
