I would NOT recommend having FedEx package your cMP for you!

Just wanted to vent. I had a classic Mac Pro shipped to me, and FedEx packaged it. This consisted of wrapping the whole thing up in several layers of bubble wrap (that part I'm ok with). Then they put it on its side at the bottom of a 24x24x24 inch box and threw a bunch of crumpled brown paper on top of it. This seems to me like a very poor job of protecting the contents. Is crumpled paper really appropriate padding for a 60 pound computer??? Of course, FedEx charges by the package size, not by weight, so using an box that is 2/3 empty certainly benefits their bottom line.

Sounds like some of their better work, actually.

Sounds like your cMP arrived intact! Consider the alternative. A few years ago my 2.0 dual G5 arrived in this condition. With that dent in the back the PCI slots were out of line. Top left in the photo you can see the handle was off. The shipping box was OK for sweater but not the G5. I sent pictures to the shipper with a complaint and was not charged for the G5.

A Mac Pro is very heavy. While bubble wrap is OK (and I hope it was bubble wrap with the big air pockets and not the tiny air pockets), it would have been safer to ship the computer in a box with foam inserts that allows the Mac to "float" inside the center of the box and absorb any of the shock of dropping and throwing the box around.

Since you received it, how was the condition? Nothing loose inside?

Did you get the mac from a company or an individual? The reason I ask is that I too received a cMP though FedEx today, but my system was FAR more professionally packed (four foam sections encasing it in a cage-like isolation structure, with bubble wrap only used to protect the mouse & keyboard.) In my case, though, I had ordered it from a company that specializes in used macs...

Going through school I worked at one of their distribution plants. It's a tough go for those boxes. They get thrown around...A LOT.

Thankfully, it seems to have survived fairly unscathed. One of the handles was slightly askew (nice looking design element but SO prone to damage) but I was actually able to bend it back to the point where you can barely tell and there is only minimal wobble. The components all seem to be firmly in place, and I'm running tests on the system now but so far so good.

The Mac was through an individual, but I asked him to ship it through FedEx and they told him that to be covered by insurance they would need to pack it themselves, so that's what we let them do. I agree the hard foam is really key to packing these older cases safely. Personally, I will only ship them inside the original Apple packaging and have been able to find empty cMP or G5 boxes off of craigslist when I've needed them.
