Futureproof i mean 5 years not 10.I have my iMac mid-2010 i7 about two years i use it professionally and certainly it will last 2-3 years more.
I believe even if will not be a pro user this processor worth the little extra cash.

Technological advancements yearly are huge but if you aren't a eager enthusiast then I guess it will last you 5 years. The thing is, if the OP won't utilize its full power, why go for more expensive CPU when you can save up the money and buy the i5 2500 and it will do the job perfectly.

The 2600 isn't anymore futureproof then 2500, both will be outperformed by 2013 chips. i5 2500 with an SSD would simply do more good then just i7 2600.

While HT isn't used as much in todays world in normal everyday tasks it will be in future, therefore "futureproofing" for next 2-4 years would be a decent idea. But the thing is, you can either save money (unless i5 2500 and ssd come to the same price /// haven not checked) which in that case you won't save money but will get more performance when loading applications, game levels/worlds.

You will be missing out on SSD, while they are small in size they still offer good performance when loading applications, booting up and so forth as mentioned above.

Future proof means that it will allow you to run the software that you want in a time frame that you are willing to spend waiting for it. If you are willing to use that then you will have a long life with the Intel® Core™ i7-2600K.

I use my computer for Media Consumtion, Browsng, Organising, Office/iWork, a little bit of Gaming, and other everyday stuff. I am not a big photo or video editor.

So where should I invest my money? Should I go for the Core i7 or the Core i5 with an SSD if I want a speedy computer for everyday tasks? Core i7 plus the SSD is too expensive for me..

If it were me & $$$ were no object I would get the i7 with 256gb ssd & later add 16 gb of ram to it. Barring some explosive leap in technology expect such a machine to last for 5+ years. You could always add other drives via firewire enclosure for more storage space.

I added a 128gb ssd to my i3 iMac last week and its been the greatest. In a few months after some pennies are saved up will get a 256 ssd & lay it right in there. :)
