Referring to this article that I saw on Daring Fireball
http://gigaom.com/2013/09/10/with-ibeacon-apple-is-going-to-dump-on-nfc-and-embrace-the-internet-of-things/

Has anyone played with iBeacon yet? This is the first I have heard of it. I am not a developer

I assume it can be turned off or set to broadcast to certain devices only; I certainly do not want ads popping up on my phone while I walk around the mall.

Why does the article reference NFC tags being placed on all items? I thought one just used NFC to transmit credit card data at a pay kiosk, as a replacement to credit cards.

If OT let me know, I can repost elsewhere...but it involves an iOS 7 feature.

Think of NFC tags as barcodes that are triggered not by a visual representation but by contact.
