oh, well I'm still using office 2000 (I can't see any difference...I mean it's just a word proccesor right?) instead of office xp right now. Iffice 97, 2000, xp...what's the difference!?!?!
I've used Office X (<-- is that what it's called?) well, the version for Macs before the most current, Office 2004-- between these two suites there is a big difference. The older version was way more buggy and crashed all the time! Also the current version has the notebook layout, which I happen to really like.

Besides, if you even bothered to look at the edu. apple.com you would have seen the ads showing that MS office stud/teach version is now ONLY $99... that's for 3 licenses! And I guess you "could" split it between 3 buddies even though the fine print says that the three copies are to stay w/in one household...

I know what software the ibook comes with, but is the preinstalled software good enough for a word processor. Taking some english classes so it will be well used, I see iwork is only good for 30 days, what else does it offer.

And yes i realize this could be the stupidest question.

In a similar situation to you when I bought my first Mac I started using the bundled AppleWorks and found it to be seriously wanting so purchased MS Office v.X. Office is a great finishing tool but actually inputting straight text I always found to be a pain as it was so slow. I completed most of my assignments in TextEdit then opened in Office to add formats etc.

Personally, I use Mellel. It's good for writing theses or novels. It has handy footnote and endnote features. It shines with style sets and character sets, which take longer to catch on to than most features, but are well worth figuring out. Mellel's arch-enemy is Nisus Writer, and the debate between the users can be fiery. Nisus is $39 academic download, Mellel is $29 academic download.

As a few others have mentioned I use NeoOfficeJ, the auqua version of OpenOfffice. It's freeware, and most of the stuff the M$ Office can do, like creating presentations etc. I highly recommend it.

It's bloatware and it's not written in cocoa. I use TextEdit because it's not bloatware and it is written in cocoa. The only problem with TextEdit is lack of footnote support.

Appleworks is hardly bloatware. It uses about 63 megs on my hard drive. If anything is bloatware, it's MS Office.

iWork isn't exactly slim and trim either, using over 700 megs. Having said that, I like iWork better. The anti-aliased text and active scrolling are reasons enough for me to switch.

Maybe bloatware was poor word choicing. Sluggish is what I meant.

I just got my new ibook (less than a week old). Last night I opened up the 30 day trial of office. I liked it because it's "pretty"
I don't do any office stuff. I've currently been using appleworks for the things I do at home IE: I use a spreadsheet for my household bills - works great for me, WP for saving stuff (paste and copy and save in a folder) and that's about it.
I have had problems every once in a while when someone sends me a .doc paper that I cannot open. Once in a while I will try and open it using appleworks application and it worked. Most of the time it does not.
I have no idea why it has worked sometimes.
In any case.... that's why I was wondering about Word -- by reading all these posts, Word would take care of that problem correct?
While I was playing around with Office last night, everytime I open up one of the apps. it says, "want to buy it now". Does that mean I can buy apps. separately or does it have to be a package deal? OR does NeoOffice offer a program to support pc users docs?
