Mac OS Rumors provides some details regarding rumored iBook updates:

The new iBooks are rumored to sport G3 processors at up to 800MHz, ATi RADEON Mobility 16MB graphics accelerators, and larger hard drives up to 30GB in the high-end model.

Their most recent update also hints at a new Digital Lifestyle device and OS X graphics acceleration.

This sounds really good, especially for the low end market. But I really like what they're going to do with the OpenGL and Video card by using it to speed up OSX. That could make a huge difference in usability - and its not just the 3D aspect, I'm not talking about a 3DOSX type app. They'll be using the graphics card to do 2D stuff as well. My only concern is how much backward compatibility will they have. I hope I'll be able to use this with my 667 TiPB.
 
You know, before the PB's came out there were rumors about a new video card, and they then surprised us with a higher resolution screen.

I've heard grumbling about the 14" screen's resolution. Has anyone heard anything about an increased resolution screen for the ibooks?
 
Yes, I've read plenty of murmers about higher res 14 " iBooks on SpyMac.com.. (Don't laugh--since the whole iWalk stupidity, it's turned into quite a good rumor and discussion forum.. go check out the forums.. it's the users making that board, not the postings on the board itself.)

I'm frankly surprised that Apple would upgrade the video to radeon mobility. Doesn't that put the iBook up at the initial level of the TiBook just < a year ago? Maybe they need to to handle the bandwidth of a higher res screen..

800 MHz g3 seems too large a bump being that it's over their normal 100 or 133 MHz bump.. especially considering the PowerBooks *just* reached 800 MHz.. why would they even put the iBook at an equivalent clockspeed? Ya ya, I know it's a g3 and that's a g4, BUT the g4 doesn't accelerate all applications..
 
I would think two new models
one 633mhz G3 and
700mhz maybe g4?? this with higher resolution 14.1"

Makes more sense since the PB just got to 800mhz


What does this all mean to the Powermacs?? G4 speed bumps to 1.4G and 1.6G soon?? Still G4 because I think Apple will unveil the new G5 with 2Gs speeds or more.
 
honestly, i think apple believes theres still a lot of life left in the G4, and there wont be anything resembline a G5 for a long long time.
 
I think that the next iBook should be a G4 and with speeds up to 600Mhz.

I don't think Apple will keep only the iBook with G3 processor (except for the old iMac). That would be nonsense.

Probably screen resolution improvement in the 14'. And maybe bluetooth enable.

But forget about DVD burner and other rumors.

I would LIKE a G4 ibook, hell I would LOVE a G4 ibook, I would buy a G4 iBook immediately...does that mean that Apple will make one soon? Unfortunately no. Look for the speed bumps and maybe another little goody built in, but I doubt that we'll see G4 iBooks until the tiBook goes G5 or the G5 towers are released.
 
ok folks the ibook is staying with G3 for quite some time for heat reasons. im not sure about an 800MHZ g3 but a 700G3 sounds just fine. i dont think a higher speed ibook will conflict with a slightly lower rated G4 PB. remember when we had a 550MHZ G4 PB and the current 600MHZ G3.

i know that the G4 has plenty of life left in it. so what? bring out the G5 PowerMac this July and use the rest of power left over to have faster G4 iMacs, and TiPBs. Personally i wouldn't mind seeing a dual 1.2 G5 this summer and then at MWSF have a dual 1.4 G5 PowerMac, a 1.2 G4 TiPB, and 1GHZ iMac.

I keep hearing how the iBook can't handle the heat from the G4 because it's made of plastic. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah ....

They're putting P4s at 1.6Ghz inside plastic Dells and Gateways. And G4s produce much much less heat than P4s. I'm sure that Apple can easily put a G4 inside even the 12" iBook, let alone the 14".

Apple may not go with a G4 in the iBook (although I think they will), but it won't be because of heat issues.
 
I don't think it should be necessary for the Ti to go G5 before the iBook gets a G4. The very first clamshell iBooks were G3's when the Powerbook was also a G3. The Ti hadn't come out yet.

I'd have no problem with the new iBook still being a G3 if it weren't for the fact that OS X is optimised for the G4. Apple even advertises this. "Altivec optimizations!!" blah blah blah. If they keep saying this, then they shouldn't bring out new machines with the older chip. It makes them sound ancient, even if they really aren't.
 
To a consumer what would the difference between a hypothetical G4 iBook and the existing G4 tiBook amount to when you factor in the price difference? I don't think the ti would be twice as good at twice the price.
 
Hmmm

Why all this "TiBook has to go G5, before we'll see a G4 in the iBook"??? Both the iBook, AND the PowerBook were on the G3 prosessor at the same time for one and a half year.

(OK, OK, the old iBook looked like a toilet seat, so you KNEW it wasn't a pro machine......)
 
i've been seeing a few ibooks around lately and i gotta say, this thing looks good. i mean, i just hadn't seen them too much and i'm realizing how nice they look. them and the ti... though i'd seen the ti more.

it's funny how sometimes one might desire a lesser computer just for fun... i have a dual 800 but i think it'd be cool to grab an ibook for kicks. of course... i'm a student. so oh well. ha

c'mon,

Consumers are stupid, but they're not that stupid (well, except the ones that shop at Best Buy and think the salespeople there know what they're talking about). When consumers see something that looks similar (on the surface), but has a huge price differential, they investigate.

For example, when they look at a G4 iBook 600 priced at $1800 and a G4 TiBook 800 priced at $3200, they're gonna think, "why's that one cost so much more?" Then they'll see that the TiBook has MORE memory, MORE hard drive, MORE video stuff, MORE pixels, MORE screen, MORE metal, MORE L3 (whatever that is), MORE PC Card slots, and MORE CD speed. "Oh, that's why it cost so much more."

Seriously, just look at Dell. They offer the Ghz+ P4s on two lines of laptops. The 8200 series costs so much more that the 2600 (I think). But the price differences are can be easily explained by the amount of stuff that the two laptops are equipped with.

If Apple does decide to put the iBook @ G4 levels simultaneously with a G4 TiBook, they have to be smart enough to include in enough "features" into the TiBook to justify the price differential. Or they could exclude enough "feature" out of the iBook to do the same.

Bottom Line: Consumers aren't as dumb as most people want to believe they are. No one (except the extraordinarily stupid) goes into a $1000+ purchase without having done some research into the purchase.
 
1. Most people were hoping for, but still surprised, when the iMac went G4 in January.

2. Most people are still surprised that Apple came out with a G4 for the education market at $999.

3. Conclusion: The 14" iBook will get higher screen res and a G4. Of course! (Either at WWDC ar MWNY)

And thats the reason I will be so broke this summer but happy with my new G4 iBook.

Already low on cash with this G4 iMac here.

I also need another external hd. Filled up 260 gigs already :eek:
 
Whatever they do to the iBook, be it a real fast g3 or a lowcost g4 without ddr l3 support, they will have to kick the kind-a-long-in-the-tooth rage mobility and the 66MHz for good.
I hope they put iTunes and quicktime control buttons near the display shutter, but they won't.
Nor will I get my two button scrollstick trackpad, will I!
Bluetooth at last?
Higher res would be nice, too. But even new iLamp has 1024x768 :(

+ it's just so small :)
+ the display is excellent
+ the combined av-out is excellent
- internal 10GB have sucked since day one
- graphics performance and vga support require update (radeon?)
- the stereo speakers are insulting!
- no audio-in. new ti has it...

New iBooks at affordable prices in May? I'd like that.
After all, it has been working out nicely for me since last May:D

By the way, I understand unix-based systems are potentially easily scaleable. How about giving notebook users the choice not to have their OSX killing the poor 2,5" drive with superfluos unix services? I still can't let my OS9 go:(
 
SAVE THE 12" SCREEN!

sorry. I just had to say that.

The 12" screen is just right for the iBook. The iBook was designed for a 12" screen.

If Apple's going to make a laptop with a 14" screen, please re-deisgn the case. The 14" iBook is ugly...
