State of Denial
I was surfing on my bed last night with my iBook, and fell asleep, with the pillow almost completely covering it. I woke up at about 5:30 to find that it was very hot, and something, which I hope is the fan was being very loud. In my still-half-asleep state, I couldn't tell whether air was blowing through the vents or not, but regardless, when I put it to sleep, what I assume was the fan stayed on. I'm asking this question because the fan (if there is one) has never come on before, so I'm making sure that a) there is a fan b) it's supposed to be really loud. The only thing I could think of as an alternative would be a (physically) crashing HD, which would, needless to say, be a VERY bad thing. Thanks!

once in a great while when i shut the lid to my ibook, the monitor does not turn off. further, the computer does not power down. this causes the computer to get very hot, and the fan kicks into high gear. this will happen if you close the ibook during an installation process of the OS.

Something similar used to happen to my TiBook in the days of OS 10.1.3 & 10.1.4 - about 1 in 10 times whenever I closed the lid to put it to sleep, the display would turn off but the sleep light would not come on, and the CPU would go crazy and get hot and the fan would eventually come on high. Had to power off and on to make the computer usable again. Never had it happen again in 10.1.5 or Jaguar.

The snow (non-toilet-seat) iBook has a fan, but it rarely comes on. I would venture to guess that this was just a freak occurance with no harm done.
