i do need to upgrade because hardly any software works on tiger anymore. do u think upgrading to panther will sort that out?

Mmmm, maybe. Not purchased from the US at your current exchange rate! If you buy from a domestic UK seller, expect to pay slightly more -- your software seems to cost somewhat more than the dollar -> pound conversion would suggest.
