Ibook g3 stuck on grey screen

Will it boot from the DVD/CD? Does it make a 'bong' sound on startup?

Pop it the OSX DVD that came with the ibook and hold 'c', when it loads access disk utility and check that the disk is ok.
You may need to repair the disk.
