iBook G4 knackered?

Hi,

My iBook G4 has had some strange problems recently. Firstly quite a few applications aren't working (examples are AppleWorks, NeoOffice, Preview but others like Stickies and iPhoto are fine). The volume controls aren't doing anything, and it can't be shut down (the button and the option on the Apple Menu do nothing).

These have rendered it near useless. I've got an appointment in the Apple Store booked, but are there any ideas of something I can do that may sort it out?

Pull the battery and restart it. Its harsh, but it could get you on your feet again.

Tried. No change unfortunately.

Is re-installing the OS (10.3.9) from scrath worthwhile? There's no important files that aren't also on my iMac.

Wow. Really?
I wouldn't bother with installing 10.3.9 this sounds like a hard drive or other hardware problems.
