An iBook G4 running a pretty, up-to-date OS that is perfectly capable of browsing the modern web.

It is finally on par with the rest of the industry. A sight to behold.

What desktop environment are you on, or what components did you use to make yours?

Openbox DE, with parts of xfce4 (panel, plugins, notifications) and PCManFM running the desktop. I built other parts of the DE myself, like skippy for window switching, GIMP (not available in complete form in sid) and Youtube-DL-GUI to grab videos outside of the browser. I also built an old version of slingshot launcher, but it's slow as hell, so I don't really use it. I browsed around for various themes and change them up here and there using lxappearance and Openbox configuration manager. The pulldown terminal is Guake.

I have tried every method of install on 2 different ibook G4 and 1 Power Mac G5. The cd's keep offering a decrementer error and the usb keeps offering a mismatch and final fail error. I sent you an email regarding your project if you have a chance please reply. Thanks

Pretty cool, I also have Debian Bullseye/Sid running on a Mid 2005 iBook G4.

Haven't done as much cool customization, but lxde running with Palemoon web browser.

Honestly, I've forgotten, so many Linux installs the last few days:eek:

I know I used a USB Key, my DVD/CD has gone south on this one.

Give us the exact steps your using, and what errors you have, exactly, and we maybe able to help.
I have tried usb and DVD. Neither will boot on ibook g4. I used the same dvd on a mac mini g4 and i get a command line install but cant get the repos to work. In the gui install it just failed so i ignored now im logged into the system i updated sources.list and ran update and im getting no pub key and not signed errors

Likely has something to do with the installer image you are using, try one of the daily builds, tho note yaboot was removed as the bootloader sometime around 4/27/19.

So rather than boot cd:,\\:tbxi you may need to provide the exact path to the grub.elf.

This gave me no end of trouble, as the grub.elf has moved to /System/Library/CoreServices/grub.elf on the later install images.

I didn't have any luck with the grub.elf on my Quad, had to use an older image that still had yaboot.

yaboot can be fickle, on my late 2005 Dual the HD with yaboot needs to be in the #1 SATA port/slot or it won't boot. On the Quad G5 yaboot can't boot an ext4 file system, I had to make a /boot and /home partition and format /boot as ext3.

The grub installer will always fail on the later install images, it expects the disk to have a PReP partition, and I don't think that's ever going to work on a CHRP machine. After the Grub installer fails, just boot rescue and chroot in and install yaboot.

Ok I’ll try your suggestion now what about the Mac mini that built I can’t update the repos as I’m getting no pub key errors and more

Post you apt sources.list

PS, why run Linux on a Mini, when we spent so much time getting OS 9.2.2 to run on it.

I see the typo and fixed it but same error

Looks good there, it may have something to do with the installer image you are using.

Try this one: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/2019-07-16/debian-10.0-powerpc-NETINST-1.iso

I just verified it works from USB Flash Drive on both the Late 2004 iBook and the Mid 2005 iBook, in so far as it boots to the installer.

On both machines usb1 is the rearward port and usb0 is the frontward port:

Code:
boot usb0/disk:,\\grub.elf

How many people actually use the Wiki's installation guides, and have you experienced any problems when following it? Are they faulty in any way?

@oldskooltek, are you trying to get Debian 10 Buster or Debian 11 Sid running? On which machine? Are you following the guides? What in particular is failing you, and at what point?

You need to go ahead and edit you apt sources so you can install yaboot, it's not installed.

The config you posted before should work.

Code:
apt install yaboot hfsutils
yabootconfig -b /dev/sda2
ybin
At what point do I do that I completed install grub failed so I followed the instructions to configure yaboot and that fails if I reboot the system it fails to boot and defaults to a shell???

After Grub fails to install, chose Continue Without a Bootloader, and let the install finish. Reboot the system when the install is complete, again boot the installer only chose Rescue Mode. Go through the language setups and other stuff until it asks you to select a root partition from a list , should be sda3.

Execute the root shell from /dev/sda3, edit you apt soruces like before, and issue the commands from my last post.

You should now have a bootable system.
