I have a friend who's logic board failed and they want the info backed up off their hard drive.

Query #1 - Does the Firewire option have a hope in hell of still working? Is there danger to my mac if I were to try?

Query #2 - I have an IDE 3.5" external hard drive case, could I pull the HD out of the ibook and plunk it in this external case and pull the info off? Its a short-term solution as I will transfer over the files to their new computer.

Thanks,

uMac

1) I take you mean target-disk mode and it depends on what you mean by 'failed' but it's doubtful. Definitely worth a try though, it's not going to screw your machine.
2) Yes, just whack it in a caddy and backup the data.
