Rockin' Pittsburgh!
both current ibooks are 1024x768. Apple only supports mirroring, but there are firmware hacks to re-enable the function. I don't know why apple has enfatuations with crippling hardware from time to time; I'd find this particularly useful, esp. w/ 32mb of video ram. Do any pc makers put this limitation on their machines?

Yes, plenty of them do. I'm typing this on a budget Dell Laptop, that only supports mirroring. The graphics card is certainly capable of doing more. In fact if you look at the product page for the Radeon 9200 (used in the ibook G4), it says that screen spanning support is an 'oem option' so this is standard stuff.
