The_Man,
For WMV files to play in the browser, I use Flip4Mac WMV Player ( http://flip4mac.com/wmv.htm ). Basically, it adds a plug in to Quicktime Player that allows you to play WMP in Quicktime. It costs $10 to buy, but there's a free trial (be warned, though, that the free trial will only play the first half of movies). Honestly, it was worth the $10 because it's so much simpler than Microsoft's version of WMP for Mac. I've tried VLC, but it was a bit confusing and wasn't good for browser plug-ins.

Okay, well I usually find that some WMVs play inside the browser whilst others do not - it seems to depend entirely on the coding of the site in question but I don't know enough about this sort of thing to be any more helpful than that, sorry.

As for reimporting your pictures, I think that'd be a great idea. To delete an album, simply right click on it and select Delete. Right click can be replaced with CONTROL-CLICK at your whim. :)

I made a mistake, it wasnt the album that i couldnt delete, but the things under library called 2002, 2003, etc. The little symbol to left of it looks like a calendar, is it possible for me to delete these?

How do I get rid of Volumes?

This is a great thread (my ibook arrived on Monday). Here's a question-- I downloaded firefox and thunderbird. I opened the diskimage, then I opened the volume. Then I dragged the applications into my application folder, and finally onto my dock. Then I dragged the white "volumes" to the trash. Everything is fine (for some reason Mail wont communicate with my ISP; thats for another thread some time). The only problem: every time I open the apps (Firefox and Thunderbird) the "volumes" (the white things) reappear on the desktop (top right under the hard drive). Why? I trashed/ ejected them after installing the programs. The apps are in their proper place. What do I do to make the "volumes" go away?

EDIT: Ah-- I force quit the apps; emptied the trash; all gone.

What happens when you click the calendar? Do they disappear into the bottom of the window?

rosalindavenue, at a guess, did you drag the apps from the disk image, straight to the dock and then to the Applications folder? Also, once you trashed the disk images, could you still access the apps from the dock or did you have to ditch the icon and drag another one onto the dock?

When I click on the calendar, normally the photos would show up, according to the year i took the photo. I dont know exactly what it is or why its there.

On another note, can anyone else confirm that this 'remote control car sounding scuffing noise' that I hear when I wake my computer from sleep or turn it on is normal?

-In windows, I can use the 'delete' key to delete text in front of the curser, how do i do this on my mac?

Thanks

I think that you have described what I did-- I went from the disk image to the dock first, then to the apps folder-- thus starting the apps from the dock were bringing the volume back. I ditched the icons and dragged new ones from the applications folder-- now I'm fine-- Thanks for your help madjew.

I've attached a photo of what I think you're talking about however it may be slightly different depending on your settings. Does clicking on the light blue button make it disappear though?

My iBook makes minimal noise apart from when I use the optical drive. Hopefully you're just more sensitive about this than me but if it gets worse or starts clicking, that could be a dead drive in which case you should back everything up and take it to a store. However, this is extremely unlikely in your case. :)

I assume you mean use the DELETE key to delete forwards, right? At last check, it deleted text in front of the curser by default. Try typing FN-DELETE where FN is the key in the bottom left hand corner from memory to delete text to the right of the curser. :)

This is such a Nub question but...... when i install something, i get a volume (white hard drive lookin' thing) and the .dmg file. Just to clarify the .dmg contains the volume thing (white hard drive thing), right? Also, when i eject the volume, does that dissapear completely? then i trash the .dmg and then all the things would be gone correct? (except for the app)

Mad jew, that is not the thing i am talking about, but thanks for trying. How can i take a screen shot of just a certain area of the screen to show you.

That's right. Drag what you want to use (generally just the app into the Applications folder) out of the white disk and then drag both the .DMG and the white disk to the trash. :)

COMMAND-SHIFT-4 and then drag out a box. Convert it in Preview to a .JPG by Saving it As...s o that you can post it properly on here. :)

Here it is (its really no big deal, but it just making me angry)

You can uncheck the last two in the Preferences but I don't know how to delete the others, sorry. However, clicking the arrow will make them disappear. :)

Thanks Mad Jew, im just wondering if you can describe the noise your iBook makes as best you can when it starts up, this is the only thing about my iBook that is bothering me. I feel that its too loud and scuffy sounding.

It makes an initially relatively loud noise as the hard drive starts spinning itself up (or whatever it does) but then it sort of hums for a little while I suppose as the OS loads but it's practically silent during normal usage. Of course, it's an 800MHz model and I imagine it would therefore run quit a bit quieter so I'd probably get less fan noise than you do (at the expense of speed :p ).

Yah, i know the noise is not fan noise. Its sounds like the hard drive or the optical drive. Its fairly loud, and i just want to make sure that it is not going to fail on me anytime soon.
Other than this litle noise, my iBook has been perfect, it is the most amazing computer i have ever used. I am so happy i bought it I just have to get the normal newbie kinks worked out.

Regarding noises during startup:Do you have a CD/DVD in your optical drive during startup?

My powerbook makes quite a bit of noise with a disk in the optical drive but not otherwise. I don't think your optical drive should be making sustained noises if there's no disk in there, but I don't know how different iBooks and powerbooks are about that.
