okay the only thing i can think of is that when the machine was off i took out the battery and poped it back in just messing around with the whole unit. and then like i start to notice that the machine is not conserving power from the ac adapter. and i need this bad boy to start working like asap. i have a research paper on that machine and its due friday! if anyone knows some little trick to get this notebook back up and running please notify me asap...thanks

I have a iBook 800 which will sometimes fail to start back up after sleeping or shutting down. I'm thinking/hoping it's just some bug in the OS, but anyway to get the thing to start back up try to following...

Take the battery all the way out, wait 20 seconds, then press and hold down for 10 seconds the power button above the keyboard, then wait another 20 seconds, put the battery back in, and assuming the battery is charged, hit the power button and hopefully it will start up.

This seems to work for mine every time, and maybe it will work on yours. Perhaps you've tried this already.?.?

I hope this is just an OS bug, and hope Apple will fix it. Actually, I haven't tried the 10.2.5 update on this machine yet, so maybe that will fix it. What is your OS version?

Does anyone else know a permanent fix for this????

you might also try checking the battery contacts-- make sure there's no debris in there...

tho it's more likely the power manager, as described above. i think it's been a QC problem for apple...

This has happened to me several times. Is it winter where you are? Or was it really cold somewhere you took it before you tried to turn it back on? If so this is safety precaution since bring the laptop form a cold to warm place causes condensation on the inside which could mess up the ibook if started up. If you wait awhile and let everything adjust it will start up again.

However my ibook not starting up when it was not exposed to cold has occurred as well. As I remember I was screwing around with the battery the last time I had used it. I just took it off and put it back on a few times then she fired up.

Try the PMU reset switch on the side of the laptop.

Hold it down for 5 seconds while the laptop is off, then press the power button.

Works everytime.
