i did hear of an nt administrator on the apple site who did run his network remotely from his blueberry ibook which is cool...it is just that i have no idea how he pulled that off...just running a pc network from a pc laptop remotely is problematic and server types would love to be able not to have to live in the server room, but right now, that is the reality for many

OS X Server Admin. I can administer the server I maintain from anywhere with a network connection on my TiBook. :D

remote os x server administration....cool

with the graphic artists, they let me on their machines to to something for them to fix a bug, but the administrative assistants never usually let me touch their machines...so therefore we log in overtime and work late hours to accomodate them

it is a hidden secret in the "real" world that if there were not so many officious administrative assistants, we server and network guys would get home on time and actually be able to spend it with our familes and spouses

instead, i used to have the administravtive assistant always call security on me every time she saw me with another person's equipment...it must have been my dark skin which spooked her or the influence of friends she was hanging with at the previous night's cross burning:D

It's scary to think that people like that are still around.

so when the security guys show up, it's like "i guess they called us on another darkie call and got spooked" and they all laugh since all the security people are different, varying minorities who only seem to be chasing down people who look like them all day

mind you, the company is 90 percent white and if i were white and decided to be a criminal, i could make off with all the goods in that business...it kind of reminds me of that funny saturday night live skit where eddie murphy uses makeup to dress up like a white guy and he ends up getting all the special treatment where ever he goes and ends up with perks, drinks, and dancing girls with skimpy bikinis on...too funny but just a shadow of what dark skinned techies like me have to go through every day

to counteract that, i carry my business cards with all the degrees and certifications on it, wear my microsoft lapel pin, have my embroidered computer logo jacket, wear my microsoft techie name tag, and have on a cisco embroidered shirt on underneath

all i need to do now is tatoo all the silicon valley high tech logos on my ass (but my skin is too dark for that...ha ha...and i am a typical fat techie...so my ass is kind of scary and that would warrant a legitimate security call):p

How about putting an Apple tattoo on your forehead? Have it in white so it really stands out :D. Although at that point all the peecee techies will gang up on you and try and control-alt-delete you.

"no firewire" is reason enough.

That dell PIII will be a dinosaur by his junior year.

I hope you don`t waste your money.

and the size of dorm rooms?

The 12 inch combo drive is the way I would go. Watch dvd`s in bed, connect via airport all over campus, light and easy to carry in a backpack. The smaller the better.
