I'm not going to bring it to Apple, because it's not that bad. Just looks a bit worn.

If it does get a problem later, I plan to buy Applecare anyway. A new one would wear the same in 2 weeks anyway.

I guess I need something stronger than iKlear. I'll try the Mr. Clean thing.

This is the best picture I could get of the left one (which is the worst). Surely if this was dirt or gunk it would come off with my scrubbing it with iKlear.

Wow- yeah, that's definitely noticeable. Trust me-mine looks like the day I bought it. That's really weird. Good Luck.

It's more than noticeable...it's plain UGLY. I admit it. I think I'm going to just try and forget about it because I tried different cleaners, and they didn't do one single thing. :(

Really bummed. :( At least the rest of my iBooks looks nice from the iKlear.

Just for kicks try using a white eraser. I was told those are very similar to the Mr. Clean erasers. I've yet to try them though since I use my BT keyboard more than the laptop's.

Actually wait.. I tried using a white eraser once on the top of my book with the lid closed and it worked great easily removing a small dirt mark.

Hope you find a solution!

Just because you're as obsessive about being clean as Jack Nicholson's character in As Good As It Gets, doesn't mean you don't have crap on you that can get stuck in the tiny little spots on the iBook's surface ;) You have skin on you wrists right?

Strange-I've had my iBook over a year and use it daily and the palm rests are fine. It's probably just natural oils from your skin.

Yeah that could be it. We all have different sweat... pH and whatnot. :)

My mother always taught me to be a good boy and NOT to rest my wrists when typing, or you're more likely to get repetitive strain injury.

And my powerbook rests look ok (although pretty new).

Man, I don't know how you can type without resting your wrists on the palm rests. I'm doing it now but it hurts my forarms!

Hah! I tried ones of those uh pencil erasers that you put over the regular pencil eraser (the ones are come in colors), and tried it in a little spot and it worked. I don't think I can erase the whole area though...I don't want to damage the plastic!

HORRAY!!! My mom and I scrubbed it with PineSol <--what ever that is, and it worked GREAT! Now it's all shiny again and it ever SMELLS LIKE LEMONS!!!

Yay for new looking iBook!

Yup. Ordered some Palm Screen Protectors with anti residue stickiness like someone here recommended.

Right now, for a temp. solution, I have my wrists wrapped in plastic wrap.. Not only does it work, it looks cool!

Palm screen protector should do a good job protecting your iBook's palm rests. It is transparent (they don't distract the view of iBook's exterior) and non sticky (it is used on the screen, so it should be more than suitable on the plastic chassis). My 12" PB has these on the palm rest areas and they stay put and do not melt either.

I was a little worried about them melting so I took the one I do have for my palm and put it over the HD and then rendered some things in Photoshop and then saved the huge files to get the fans and heat coming. Sure enough, no meltage! Hope the ones I ordered come fast! My wrists are getting hot with this plastic wrap.

I had the same problem (Fall 2004 iBook G4 1GHz). What worked for me is what I've used to clean every other thing that accumulates gunk like that -- isopropyl (ie, rubbing) alcohol. Just get a Q-tip, dip it in, and rub it around. Alcohol's a great solvent, but it's gentle enough so that it doesn't mess anything up.

Don't have to worry about this with my current iBook, though -- it's all white as snow

Just don't use it on the screen. LCDs don't like alcohol. They're teetotalers ;)
