If you are comparing the PBs physical specs compared to the iBook for the money, I gotta admit, yeah the iBook probably is better. However getting the most out of what you paid for isnt always the best deal. I found this when I finally decided to land on a PB over an iBook just last month.

Here was my reasoning....

Although you get a very small bit of performance boost in terms of mhz on the PB for the lump you pay for, I paid it because I can use an external monitor. Although there are hacks for the iBook, I heard in one thread that if you forgot to reset the system, their going to void out the warranty. Not a good thing. On the PB atleast it comes standard and if you're an honest person I personally went with this route.

I also chose the PB over the iBook because I definately loved the keyboard much more than that of the iBook. I guess its a kind of a stupid reason but typing on a PB keyboard makes me feel like Im typing on something solid unlike that of the iBook. Personal opinion but it seems like its a shared opinion.

I also found the screen a bit brighter on the PowerBook

You also sound like you might be going to college? Im not sure since you didnt really say. I also went with the PB because it was actually lighter as well. Obviously its not by say a whole pound even but eventually Ill feel it on my back and shoulders :)

Another thing is that the iBook is supposedly overheats? Im not going to say this is true or not but it is something I did hear and wouldnt doubt since the casing is plastic and wont really take the heat away.

During the time when i was at the Applestore though when i was choosing out which system, I found that the biggest deciding factor was the mini DVI because I did plan on hooking it up to an external display. Since I didnt want to toy with hacks and stuff and void out my warranty i found this was definately the best bet to go.

IMO it doesnt really matter which way you go though. Its really up to you. In either case 3 years down the road, we both are going to need to upgrade our systems to something new and we both will be making a similar decision. Its a neverending cycle with computers so it doesnt really matter which way you want to swing. All this talk of that extra 170mhz will make your system more future friendly is crap. With the developers being pampered by Intel's new chips that can reach up towards 4ghz their probably going to take advantage of that and we're all going to have really slow machines. Just buy what you think what you need and will suite you just fine. For me the decision was the PB because I didnt want to hack, for you it might be the iBook because you dont need the screen spanning.

Good luck

Geez I am just thrilled with my new ibook 1.33 14" bought at a ridiculously low edu special price. I lucked out because I called about it, thinking that it was 999 but they just dropped the price to 799. Makes up for the fact that I bought a pbook there my first semester there and tho it was on sale for 2200, the edu discount price dropped 200 the next week. So "stay friends" with your college store workers and keep your eye on dropping prices next month to see what your best bet is. But if you need it now, I am supremely happy with the iBook. I especially love the "taller" screen that makes for less scrolling time on Word documents while writing -- much more practical than the pbook screen for my purposes.

...what is the real world battery life of the 12" ibook...

I get about 4.5 hours plus which I think is the norm. That's with AirPort on and the screen on maximum brightness, plus the energy settings on Normal and just doing random web surfing and playing music. :)

\...However, if you're contemplating the 12 inch screened PowerBook, I'd recommend the iBook instead since the differences are marginal.

Opinion. ^^^

"Marginal" to some, not to all. To others, the differences are huge.

I vote for a 15" powerbook. I just got one and my wife got a 12" ibook. Looking at the two there really is no comparison (of course the powerbook is almost double the price of the ibook). If you have the money I say go with the powerbook, but if you feel like the ibook will be plenty for your uses I don't think anyone will fault you for choosing that. In the end it really is up to you. Cases can be made for any machine. That is why all apple's machines sell so well.

I would also not recomend getting an iMac and an iBook. I thought about this for a long time. I thought hey I can get two for the price of one, but after thinking about everything I was going to have to buy and everything I was going to deal with I was afraid that my iBook would be getting over 80% of the time even though the iMac is a more powerful computer. I love a laptop, and will never purchase a desktop with out having a great laptop. I am in college and I love having the option to take it on campus with me even if I don't use it in class. I have all of my files with me and can get to them all on one machine, which is another reason not to get two machines. Even though I have only had my computer for about 2 days I am very happe with my purchase.

PS: Once you see that 15" Pb sitting on your desk you just wont go back to a 12" anything. (not like that) :p

Okay, you're about 12 hours slower than BlueT. :p

You post too much...

Back on topic: galstaph, I say wait until Paris Expo, unless you need something right now. Nobody really knows what Apple is going to do. Some of these people say the updates will be next to nothing. Others say the updates will be huge. Bottom line - Nobody knows. I would wait and see what Apple has up their sleeve. It could be worth it...

I know I'm right which is why there was no need to re-post. Does MacRumors pay post wh0res for having no life?

Calm down. You're the one who didn't read galstaph's post and ended up "re-posting" in the first place. :p

I'd argue that for most users, the 12 inch PowerBook offers not enough to warrant it's premium-grade price when compared to the 12 inch iBook. However, I'm fully aware that this isn't the case for everyone.

Nevertheless, this is a reasonably subjective topic (as you mentioned) and I'm more than willing to take on board anything worthwhile you have to contribute. I'm sure the MacRumors community, in particular galstaph, would really appreciate that. So, can you start by stating what your reasons are for choosing a PowerBook over an iBook if they haven't already been mentioned in this thread (we don't want re-posting :p ) rather than just making the claim that I am wrong. That is, please justify what you think, thank you.

Do you want a gimme? The PowerBook handles screen spanning better since it's a feature (not a hack) and it has a superior GPU. :)
