My friend has an iBook that is used. It used to work, but now it just has a little, fingernail-sized folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark blinking and then it blinks to the picture of the Finder.

I am not physically there with her; she sent me an e-mail via her Macbook Pro. I have never experienced this before, what does it mean?

It can't recognize the hard drive. Try starting up from the system software disc and reinstalling the system. That should work. If not, it's most likely a dead hard drive.
