of course

Apple is giving schools a little more incentive to buy ibooks this summer.

Now the eMac, OS X.2 and new ibooks... all things that would be attractive to school districts.

I agree. With new iBooks, OS 10.2 coming out, and the new eMac, schools will be very interested in buying these low cost systems for their students and teachers. Apple sold 36,000 iBooks to Maine school districts and I'm sure they can sell that many more iBooks and eMacs/iMacs to other states. Now that Apple knows they can sell a huge volume of computers to schools, they'll try even harder. Just my 2 cents.

lol, i'm just thinking about Maine right now... a month and their laptops aren't top of the line anymore... kinda sad...

but it will be nice to see whatever happens to iBooks. i'm crossing my fingers and hoping against another G3 unit...

:)

Have the Maine units already been delivered, or was the news story that they ordered new ibooks? If it's only ordered, they may bet the benefit of an update.

Don't forget rackmount servers. Schools need something to manage all of those Macs...

when?

ok ok -

but does this mean they are going to come out THIS MONTH = MAY!??

MWNY is at the end of July ! that's a really long time away....

Better with G4

With all the rumors about mac os 10.2 and the quarz exellerating with graphic card support and so on, to bring the i-Book back on track I think it should have a g4 processor, it doesn´t have the be the one with 800 MHz but it should be a g4 because if Os X is the future the new the good selling i-Book should have the g4. And if you have all this quarz exelleration with the new Os X.2 wirh a 32MB graphic card why not implement one in the new i-Book. Minor updates won´t help the i-Book much allthough it´s a great Notebook.

That´s my point of view.
So long from Germany

recommended

just wanted to point out that 32MB VRAM is just recommended not the minimum requirement according to Apple

Quartz Extreme
Jaguar dramatically improves the performance of Mac OS X with Quartz Extreme hardware-based graphics acceleration. Quartz Extreme takes advantage of the OpenGL 3D graphics engine to make the entire desktop a fully accelerated OpenGL scene. A supported* video card can then render the drawing of the desktop, just like it would a 3D game. The main CPU chip(s) can then focus on application-specific needs, making the whole system faster and more responsive.

That means your shadows will drop quickly, your genies will appear slicker and your transparencies will layer faster — and Mac OS X can do more processing in the background while you move the foreground.

and the fine print at the bottom says

*nVidia: GeForce2MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 Ti, GeForce4 or GeForce4MX. ATI: any AGP Radeon card. 32MB VRAM recommended for optimum performance.

just like when you buy any software it gives you the the minimum requirements adn the recommended ones...
what I'm trying to say is that even if you have 16MB VRAM on your GPU QE will work... so I won't be surprised is Apple puts a 16MB card on the new iBooks...

THANK YOU

I called Apple Care and found out something interresting

I called Apple Care on a battery problem for my iBook Indigo and while the guy was typing stuff into his computer I asked him some questions. First one was, "so you guys getting ready to take 10.2 tech questions?".
Tech Guy> "No, not yet but we have done some work reading up on it"
A@ron> "Myself Im looking forward to that and the new iBooks. Are they going to have a better grafics card in them"
Tech Guy> "Yes."
A@ron> "What 16 MB?"
Tech Guy> "No, 32 MB video card with much better screen resolution"
A@ron> "But the screens are staying 12" and 14 in" right?
Tech Guy> "Yes"
A@ron> "And its staying G3 right?"
Tech Guy> "Yes I don't think Apple is gonna shoot itself in the foot with their consumer and pro lineups"
A@ron> "cool"

thats about it. I got my case number for the battery problem and was told to see if the problem continues (since I reset the power management on the phone with him) and call back if the battery dies within 1-2 hours in my iBook.
Who knows if the tech people know jack sh*t anyways but some rumor fuel for the fire.

New iBooks

If Apple is going to release a new iBook, they better do it fast. Schools are already placing orders for the next year and my District has already made thier orders. Apple better do it fast if they want the new iBooks in the schools orders. On one good note though, A new school has been built in my district and they ordered about 50 new iMacs(Not sure of total) Many have arraived there. It is a new elementary school and people were worried that the flat screen would be broken by the kids, well they had an adult do everything to one of those computers and it still works fine!

now that's what i tune into macrumors for. rumors!
well done A@ron! so nice to read something that's actually 'news' instead of: "oh gee i wish apple would blah blah blah..."

If Apple comes through and puts the 32MB Video Card in them I would think the 800MHz G3 might be a pretty dang quick computer running OS X 10.2. The only speed problem I have with mine is dock, re-sizing, and scrolling performance. Am I okay to say that the new technology in OS 10.2 will help in these areas? I think a G3 will suprise many people with this technology and will help make the iBook almost as quick and responsive as it's big brother the Powerbook.

no news yet, but standing by...

There's a 5 day wait still on the apple.com/store for new ibooks, and there's a 3 working-day wait on the apple.co.jp/store site. Perhaps we'll have a another super-Tuesday next week. Schools are shopping now, teachers' conventions are next month, a just released new server aimed for educators (and others), an impending one-year birthday party for the ice-book and back-orders building up. Not to mention this would be the last hardware line to catch up to "optimum" standards for 10.2.

The rumor silence is deafening.

I have periodically been reading this website and i am glad to see macusers becoming united. I am writing in hope of some honest advice from tha mac community.

I am planning on purchasing a new computer in the following months and seriously considering a mac. Microsoft's coorporate practices have turned me off and i do not wish to support them by buying another windows computer. I do not have a preference in which model to buy, as long as it is faster than my current system.

My current machine is a 700MHZ toshiba notebook that has served me well for the past year, but now want something faster. I am a med student and use programs like MS Office, Medical Programs, Internet, Photoshop, MP3, DVD Playback.

On the consumer standpoint the ibook needs a serious speed upgrade, after sampling a 600MHZ model i would not consider this notebook unless it was in the 1000MHZ range. I want to support Apple Computer but but the rumored 700MHz model is a joke compared to other PC notebooks (1.5 GHZ)in the same price range.
thanks and hope for some responces

good for you

Good for you!

Perhaps you'll have to elaborate on the Medical Software, but otherwise you can use all of your other PC programs on a Macintosh. Perhaps you should look into a Powerbook from Apple's retail website (www.apple.com/store). The advatage of these notebooks is this:
1. Longer battery
2. Larger Hardrive
3. Faster Processor in two respects: Higher clock speed and altivec
4. Faster System bus (by 33 Mhz)
5. Larger Screen for enhanced DVD playback
6. Faster performance in OS X due to a faster graphics card (equivalant speed to that 1.5 Ghz you saw)
7. Better performance in applications such as Virtual PC (you're way out if there's no way to run that Med. Software on a mac.)

Just one con:
1. They cost more :(

Thanks for the advice. I will look further into these new powerbooks, although i still need to decide between notebooks and desktops.

The Medical programs i use are ones like Harrisons, Interactive Pediatrics, MAXX, Netter Atlas, etc. Most will run on mac and i already have a borrowed copy of Virtual PC;)

One question though, how fast will an 800 Mhz mac compare to my current PC. I know all about the difference in CPU and OS.

Unfortunatly the macs i sampled in the store did not have these apps for comparison. I plan on making a purchase in july or august, and i want to get the most for my cash.

thanks for the help

You'll need the newest version of VPC to run effectively in OS X - the best way to go for someone just learning how to use a macintosh. v. 5.0 also improves reliability, speed, and interface features. You can purchase VPC with your respective OS fairly easily.

As for speed, a 800 Mhz will be comparable to a 1.5 Ghz machine because of several different factors: Faster hard drive, Faster memory, Faster system Bus (Faster compared to your laptop of course), and faster performance due to the reliability and stability of OS X.

Good luck and best of luck finding a new Macintosh that is perfect for you! ;)
