It can't be that bad? I still use my clamshell iBook every now and then.

It´s really disappointing. It´s by far the darkest display i´ve ever seen. Surprisingly, Mac users opinions seem to differ largely:

Some agree with me concerning display´s darkness
Others report their display is fine. I believe, these do not really compare to other displays and/or manufacturers.

For comparison, here some specs i found:

iBook 12": 127 Candela
PB 15": 165 Candela.

Difference is obvious and very, very visible.

For me, Apples 12" displays are definitely inacceptable.

Sorry to say that

What I'd want to see:
-1.33/1.5GHz
-A faster bus (167Mhz like the PBG4's)
-60/80GB hard drives
-512MB RAM
-a new form factor/ a new design (as the current design is nearkt four years old )-see:
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/05/02/08/index.html
-8x SuperDrive
-Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
-a scrolling trackpad
-Core Image compliant GPU with 64MB VRAM
-Mac OS X Tiger as standard

Of course, some of these might put the iBook too close to the PB's in specifications.

ummmm ... except for the form factor (just a bit), and Tiger (not yet), you do realize that you just described a computer that does already exist, right now ... I mean, I think I get your point, but "too close" is a bit of an understatement, don't you think?

Maybe. But i am definately anxious to see whats around the corner for our beloved ibook. If the update cycle follows the same pattern it has in the past, then ibook updates are just around the corner. In April! :D

I'm another person who thinks the LCD screens are too dark. If you see them next to PC laptops in a store like Fry's or CompUSA, the Apple laptops look dark and washed out, lacking contrast and color saturation. I guess everyone's eyes are different so I can't be sure what others are seeing. But there are several PC laptops that have screens that look MUCH better to me. Each time they upgrade, I think "they're gonna HAVE to put better screens in this time, to stay competitive". And then they don't.

One of the best features on the iBook is the amazing battery life. A top quality display would probably cut this considerably.

In life you have to make sacrifices :(

It doesn't make sense for Apple to update the ibooks so considerably (it would make the powerbooks obsolete).

Heres what I would like to see:

1.33Ghz, 1.5ghz,
AE built-in (like it is now) and bluetooth OPTIONAL
An updated graphics card, preferably a 64mb one for core video
512mb ram standard
40GB hard drive standard, 60-80gb drives optional (maybe a 100gb available for 14"?)
features like the scrolling trackpad should be left on the pro line
an 8x superdrive should be optional
same displays
same prices

I agree that many people simply want a powerbook at an ibook price, but there is no way the scrolling trackpad should be left in the pro line. While 3rd party software can "fix" this missing feature, the Dell latitude I bought when starting college in 1999 had a scrolling trackpad. It's simply been missing and needs to be added to all new Apple laptops.

On the contrary, a bright, good quality display would allow you to use a lower brightness setting, while retaining an acceptable image, so I hardly think that battery life will be significantly affected.

Also, it's not just the ibooks that have a display which pales next to the best pc laptops. The powerbook displays are also considerably dimmer and less saturated with color. I really don't think it's a battery life issue. I suspect it's an intentional use of older, lower quality parts to increase profit margin.

Apple replace my dim screen under applecare

I'd noticed my 800mhz iBook G4 screen was dimmer than I had recalled. I shipped it back to apple for an applecare repair, and they declined, saying that they could not "reproduce the problem". I then took it to my local Apple store and the guy at the "genius" bar told me it was fine, until I forced him to place it side-by-side with a new iBook, and he grudgingly admitted that the screen was dim. With his note saying that he had observed the problem, Apple replaced the LCD panel.

Of course, when it came back, my optical drive stopped ejecting properly, and the techs at the repair center had bent my keyboard. Apple - much to their credit - "fixed" the second problems introduced by the first repair by replacing my 1.5 yr old machine outright - giving me a brand spankin' new 1.2Ghz model with the same BTO specs that mine had (60G, AE, Bluetooth).

That Applecare was the best money I've ever spent.

Today i took a look on the iBook 12" to determine if the display´s brighness is still as annoying as it was two years ago (i owned a 12" iBook G3 900 MHz). Well, it seems to me s(h)ituatio hasn´t changed, display is still inacceptably dark.

I intended to get one of those 12" babies - but i changed my mind. No way i will buy any book with a display as bad as this.

So, as a conclusion: i really hope Apple´s gonna change to some acceptable display, 1280x800 would be great. Of course, faster bus/CPU and GPU would be fine, but most important to me is the display.

Greez

I think the screen is not very bright in order to conserve battery power. Also the dim screen makes it a lot easier on the eyes after staring at it for more than a few hours. Typing up those long papers. :D ;)

The Apple AU store's shipping times for the iBooks are:
12"-1-2 days
Same for the 14" model.
I have one on order right now, and the estimated ship date as of today is on or before 3/31/05. Much longer than i thought it would be.

despite the fact i got my ibook about 7 mos ago, its still truckin' along quite well.. nd whats nice is that its the model with the 512 k cache.. so even though their are ibooks a lil faster out there than mine.. i don't feel all that neglected.. i mean cmon'.. its almost as fast as a mac mini eh?

Question guys. Can i plug in speakers and listen to music with the ibook closed in sleep mode?

nope... but if its just the monitor on sleep than yes.. if its the entire laptop with the pulsing white light out in front then no ;)

Shipping time for the 12" is up to 5 days, with 14" at 2 days, (from UK store.) Is this a sign of iBook updates around the corner?

Vow, I hope this really implies that there will be updates of ibook in April, because I am goona buy one. I love this white book. :)

I am just waiting for the updates of 512 RAM and Tiger!

I really dont see the point in that, if you plan on upgrading the ram anyway. If the ibook comes with 512 it will be 2x256 modules. If you ever want to upgrade from that then youll have to throw out a 256 stick and guess what your left with? 1 256 module. Which is the same as they are right now. I wouldnt expect major updates to the ibook(if any come at all). I would expect them to be shipping with Tiger and 512 and thats it. The ibooks are at a great price right now. Thats why i just bought another one. Also they are so well priced that you can buy one for 1000 bucks then in 6 months or so if you really want to upgrade you can do so more easily. Since you only spent about 1000 bucks last time. Instead of spending 2000 on the pb, then when they come out with a whole new awesome form factor in 6 months or so (which they will because the aluminum pb is on its last leg) you can get it. ;)

Now 512 on the logic board would be great.

We usually hear some some sort of buzz/rumor in advance of an update, and there has been next to nothing about iBooks. Compare to the recent buzz on iMacs, for example.
When the iBook went G4 there was nothing eminating from the rumour mill. It just popped out. But I do anticipate a hardware upgrade in iBooks and iMacs before Tiger is released early June. Additionally the PowerMac is due, but I think that will happen also at WWDC, in a kinda big double-gun push for them hungry cash-loaded developers. Us low grade consumers will have to pay up before then with less product fanfare.

Also native support for display spanning-without using the hack available online would nice.
Nice but unlikely. That would be trespassng in the PowerBooks' territory. The hack works just as well, anyway.
