I have a large number of .epub books that were acquired outside of the Apple ecosystem and load without an issue to iBooks (the metadata even loads). The issue is I can not get them to my iOS device (iPad or iPhone) without going into the file directory and just emailing it to myself.

Any suggestions on how to get the share option to work in iBooks or push these to devices like I do with music/photos?

Thank You!!

Without using iTunes, the easiest way is to email yourself.

Otherwise make a private web page with them and download them on iOS device.

Once you have the same files, your reading progress should sync up over iCloud even for your own epub files.

Technically, iBooks doesn't sync using iCloud but rather using your Apple ID (ie store account.) This is a bit counterintuitive since almost all iOS apps are expected to sync using iCloud. But, iBooks behaves similar to iTunes in that the store account is used. Which means, if you share your iTunes store account with your family, then everybody gets their EPUBs marked up with a common set of annotations. The iCloud account you sign into on each Mac or iOS device doesn't matter for iBooks sync.

how does one go about using itunes for this?
books that are showing up under the 'sync books' tab in itunes are syncing fine, problem is only a few of them are actually showing up. i have 21 items in ibooks and only 8 are showing up to sync from itunes. they're not just old books that have been synced either, one i acquired today is in there and synced. i just can't figure out how it got there or how to get the rest of them included and onto my ipod from itunes.

Have you transferred purchases?

If yes, try to add the epub files to your iTunes library on your computer.
