where is my pdf iBooks viewer on my iPad? Doesn't seem like a far stretch to have included that out of the box.

Well, it would be really surprising if we didn't get that feature by the time iOS4 is available for our iPads.

It'll be on the iPad by the end of the month...

As it currently stands, is there any way to view PDFs natively on the iPad, or do you have to convert them/view them in HTML?

If you search the app store for PDF

there are tons of PDF viewers

but most suck and none are really great IMO

What would be cool is if they allowed us to create our own virtual bookshelves to put books in by category. although the itunes application as it stands now, shows folders for other apps like mobilestudio, Air sharing, etc - but you can't open or move stuff to those folders through itunes.

But having virtual bookshelves would be cool, then I could have everything organized like it is on my mac and also my physical bookshelves in my office.

On my mac I have books and PDF's separated by type:

Bibles & commentaries
Elderly Ministry
Youth Ministry
Pastoral Ministry
Counseling
Sermon helps and sample outlines
SQL Server
Unix
Mac OS X
Visual Studio
etc.

But for now, just loving the idea of having PDF's for those that do not convert nicely to epub (more of a problem with the format of the PDF)

good one

Where would you start? Kind of think wherever it started someone would question it. Seems Jobs just cannot satisfy everyone everyday. How does it matter if iBooks was first subject or last? Maybe like the good salesman he is Steve just wanted to start of slow. I for one liked it first. YMMV

I agree. Software development is a moving target. He is just releasing whats ready when its ready. Id rather that then get one big payday with lots of bugs. Either way for those of us who use PDFs every day, its a great bonus.

Also to the post on the iPad, I have had no problems with iPad and pdfs either natively or with access from very simple appstore apps to organize them. I don't need iOs for that? Why would it matter if ibooks for iPad released this round? Its my iPhone that cant handle PDFs correctly?

To answer the iPad question, it was demonstrated on an iPad so I assume its not a iOS4 thing. The iPad should have the new iBooks once its released.

GoodReader Fan

I don't agree with you: i'm using Fast PDF and it's PERFECT.

It has everything you need, a long list of features that i cannot copy here...

One for all: iBooks like bookshelf interface.

http://itunes.com/apps/fastpdf

I like Good Reader.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goodreader-large-pdf-viewer/id306277111?mt=8

I think its way ahead of Fast PDF. Reads basically all file types. Integration with most servers and email, wifi, as well as the mail app on the ipad.

You may change the view from shelf mode to category mode, which will gives you list of books grouped by categories. Not as fancy as bookshelf, but it works

I am curious about wireless syncing of places, bookmarks and notes.
Does that work only for books I bought from iBooks Store or for books imported through itunes as well?

The update came just in time. I needed to use PDF functionality the very next day. In fact, I was about to purchase goodreader, and the iPad began prompting me to download an update for iBooks. I was pretty pleased, as I don't want to have any more applications on my desktop than necessary.

After using it for a few days and several hours worth of PDF viewing, I have to say I'm pretty satisfied. I've seen goodreader on a friend's iPad, and for all practical purposes there seems to be no benefit to the paid app...unless you need to read umpteen different file formats. For me, all I need are PDFs, so I'm good.
