You look at calendars list in Calendar app or iCal app to see if your desired calendars are associated with iCloud. if calendar is on iCloud, it is automatically pushed to all devices.
Your wife should share her calendars with you so that you can see them.
Are you saying we need to create a calender that's called "reminders" then when we create reminders using the reminders app, they will show up in this calendar?

The reminders app in iOS 5 just gets and updates reminder items in the iCloud. If you use iCal and set up an iCloud account on your Mac Lion, those reminders list would show up on the right side of iCal.

You can go to iCloud.com and open up Calendar app. You will see an icon to the right of a calendar. Click on it to share with your wife. You just need to enter your wife Apple ID (iCloud ID).
