iChat and AIM problems

I have now tried iChat and Adium for my powerbook and whenever I sign on to AIM and attempt to instant message someone, it doesn't work and says the operation timed out. Where do I go for help on this?

Have you tried some basic troubleshooting such as disabling all firewalls between you and the wider web, restarting any hardware such as routers, or logging in to the same IM accounts from a different machine?

still no luck

i dont believe i have any firewalls on. yesterday when i logged onto AIM on my sister's PC it signed me on without any problem. i turned on and off our DSL box. still no dice.

Check in

System Preferences->Sharing->Firewall->and make sure that the little box for iChat/Bonjour is checked to allow info to go back and forth.


Or, if you want, just turn your firewall "off" if it's on....

aol instant messenger

weird however, that when i use aol instant messenger it still says that it timed out? does this have different firewall settings for incomin information?

Possibly, but you don't want to use AIM anyway... really. Try Adium now. You get cool stuff like this 🙂.

Glad to help....

Not sure about the official AIM firewall settings....because I never, ever use AIM...I always use iChat...but, I imagine in AIM>preferences there should be something in there about what ports to allow in the firewall....if not...stick to iChat 😉

adium doesn't work either

only ichat works. adium seems nice but like instant messenger it will not receive information. i imagine i need to allow come firewall like i did for ichat to get adium or AIM working but i have no clue how to do this

stick with what works...

If iChat works, then stick with it...

But, if you really wanna get to the bottom of the issue with AIM and Adium, that's beyond me because I am strictly an iChat guy.
