ichat... (connection can't be established)

I have ichat with the glims add-on, and I have been trying to screen-share with friends. My friend is in Canada and I am in the Caribbean, but everytime we try this the screen-share dialog says could not be established??? Am I too far, do I need to be on a private network?? what is the deal here???

The Apple article on screensharing lists the following as a requirement:

At least 128 Kbps upstream and downstream bandwidth. At least 300 Kbps is recommended.
