I am about to start a new job at a company that has lots of Macs and uses Xserv. We have an office here in the States and one in China. I start in a few weeks and I am expected to hit the ground running with a solution to stream line the work process with our China office. My first thought was using the iChat server to enable secure IM, desktop sharing and some video confrancing. My only question is will this work over a internet connection. The China office would come in over our internet connection. Can you configure iChat client and the server to talk that way or will I have to setup a VPN?

I'd go back one stage and verify how the two locations connect at present? Is there already a vpn in place? Make sure that the basic network services are functioning and set up correctly like DNS and Open Directory.

If these services are all in order then the ichat solution should work well for you.
