My friends each have iBook G4s and are wanting to video conference over iChat. At first they told me they had MacBooks and I thought, oh that's easy because of the built in iSights. But they were wrong and both have iBooks.

Now what is the easiest way for them to get video conferencing on their iBooks?

Thanks

Maybe if they can find an old iSight on eBay. Any camcorder with firewire will work as well as video class USB webcams.

How about...

...an iSight camera? Seems like you answered your own question. Check the marketplace, eBay, Craigslist, local Mac resellers (not Apple stores) for what they have available. Alternatively, buy a compatible third-party camera. A forum search (or a Google search) will clear that one up, too.

I've never bought a 3rd party webcam for OS X so I just wanted to make sure that they are compatible with iChat.

Thanks for the help!

support.apple.com probably has a document for supported usb webcams. they added a ton of support in 10.4.9 I think.

the Xbox 360 live vision camera is one that comes to mind. It's white so it matches the MB/iBook and it is pretty cheap (like 40 bucks I think)
