i got rid of icloud when it was pulling data randomly and killing the battery but thinking about getting back into it, my question is have any of those issues been resolved through 5.1? thanks

Perhaps you should be more suspicious of an app you recently downloaded (or downloaded in the time frame of your iCloud experience). You don't want any accidentally running in the background (such as frequent weather checks or news updates). Animated screens also drain the batteries quickly.

I've never had a battery issue having iCloud sync. Backups are done only while on wifi with power, unless you manually authorize it in Settings.
