i have a free 5 GB plan. My photos are 30 GB. What happens if I do the following:

    1. Subscribe for the 60GB plan by paying for 1 month.

    2. Back up my photos on iCloud.

    3. Cancel my plan. So I get the proportionate refund

    4. Subscribe the plan when I require again.

    5. Follow step 2-5 repeatedly.

Can it happen that I effectively don't pay anything by the method and I can get a backup whenever I want?

If you downgrade and have more stored than is available with the downgraded plan, iCloud will effectively stop working: You won't be able to use iCloud email and apps that sync to iCloud won't work either (not to mention backups, etc not working)

Also, IIRC, the only way to get photos backed up to iCloud (apart from copying them using finder) is to enable iCloud Photo Library and that will also stop working

Is it really worth it to save less than a dollar a month?

I only use iCloud to backup. I haven't turned on iCloud Photo Library and don't use iCloud mail...
